This Position reports to R&D Team Lead.
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Principal R&D Engineer to join our R&D team. Together, we develop solutions that improve metallurgical processes for customers around the world. You will use your expertise in electromagnetic modeling, design, and analysis to contribute to customer projects and drive innovation in industrial applications.
Your role and responsibilities
Electromagnetic modeling and simulation.
Design and analyze electromagnetic stirrers.
Develop calculation tools, including programming and mathematical modeling.
Write technical reports and scientific publications and present these at conferences.
Provide technical leadership and contribute to the team's growth by mentoring junior colleagues and sharing expertise.
Support sales and customers in technical issues.
Contribute to new inventions and help keep our patent portfolio up to date.
The role includes occasional international travel, as our projects and customer collaborations span across global markets.
Qualifications for the role
MSc or PhD in electromagnetics, electric-machine design, process metallurgy, physics or other relevant post-university experience.
Several years of experience in electromagnetic analysis, process metallurgy, simulation, and modeling.
Background in international collaborative R&D projects.
Experience in IP management, metal-making process, and CFD calculations are an advantage.
Fluent in English. Swedish is an advantage.
Strong communication skills and a customer-focused mindset.

ABB Metallurgy develops and delivers electromagnetic stirrers for steel and aluminum production. Our main customers are steel and aluminum plants. In our R&D team we work together using advanced calculation and multi-physics tools to demonstrate how electromagnetic stirring improves customer processes in metal production, such as melting and casting. We continuously improve and apply these models in customer projects to ensure performance and meet process improvement goals.
