The department is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for education and research in several basic and applied areas. These areas include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, genetics, breeding, immunology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, epizootology, comparative medicine, food safety, bioinformatics and One Health.
Our research covers everything from production animals to sports and pet animals, laboratory animals and wild animals. The department's researchers work on the entire scale from molecular mechanisms and microbiology to the structure, function and behaviour of animals, and how these are affected by breeding, physical activity, care, production, stress, environmental factors and diseases.
The current position is in the field of quantitative genetics and animal breeding, and will belong to the section of Applied Genetics. The research at the section is focused on how to improve animal populations for traits like production, performance, health, fertility and temperament. We provide genetic evaluation service and development for warmblood riding horses and standardbred trotters in close collaboration with the breed organizations.

Research subject: Animal Science
Description:
The Swedish warmblood horse (SWB) is one of Sweden's largest breeds. The breeding goal is to produce internationally competitive horses in jumping and/or dressage. Equestrian sport at high level is demanding and many aspects have to be optimized for the horse to perform well and stay sound. The underlying factors of successful performance and soundness, and the consequences of breeding for more extreme horses are still unknown. The project will contribute to knowledge about optimum characteristics for sound and high-performing sport horses. This knowledge is important for individual breeders as well as for breed organisations, and is crucial for sustainable horse production and horse welfare.
The project includes two years of research education. In this project you will be focusing on the about 50 linearly described traits that have been recorded on young SWB horses since 2013. These conformation, gait and jumping traits are assessed on a scale from one biological extreme to the other, e.g., short to long, inelastic to elastic. The traits will be correlated to health status, collected from surveys and insurance data, longevity and competition results. A large part of the project will be about data modeling and it is important that you enjoy working with statistical analyses.
Qualifications:
You have a master's degree in animal science, or equivalent, and you have a strong interest in breeding and statistics. It is an advantage to have experience of handling large amounts of data, research experience within the subject and to have knowledge in genetic analyses and Swedish sport horse breeding.
Good skills in English (both written and oral) are required. The ability to understand and speak Swedish or another Scandinavian language is meriting. Due to the close collaboration with the breed organization in the project, emphasis will also be placed on good social skills. The ability to work both in teams and independently and to show initiative will be considered as merits for this position.
