24 month full time postdoctoral position within the research group led by Professor Joakim Larsson, Department of Infectious Diseases, Institute for Biomedicine, Sahlgrenska academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The focus of the research group is on antibiotic resistance development, particularly the role of the external environment.
Subject area
Antibiotic resistance
Specific subject description
Most of the resistance genes that cause problems in the clinic today seem to originate from harmless, environmental bacteria. Our group studies the driving forces behind this development, particularly how low levels of antibiotics may affects processes such as mobilization of resistance genes, mutations, horizontal gene transfer, selection and transmission of resistance between environments. In some sub-projects, we study the evolutionary relationship between resistance genes in environmental bacteria and pathogens, and search for new forms of resistance in different environments using both bioinformatic methods as well different large-scale functional screens. A better knowledge about what resistance factors we might face in the clinic tomorrow is valuable to be able to respond rapidly to new threats. We have recently identified a large set of candidate resistance genes, among which we already have found a number of completely novel, mobile resistance genes with little or no apparent similarity to known resistance genes. We are now looking for a postdoc who wants to take on the task to characterize these resistance gene candidates.
Job assignments
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct research with the aim of investigating the function, origin, regulation, expression and mobility of genes identified as potential antibiotic resistance genes. The research can also involve other aspects regarding the evolution, presence and transmission of antibiotic resistance, as part of other ongoing projects within the research group. (please see
http://biomedicine.gu.se/ominst/avd/infektion/forskare/joakim_larsson). The work is expected to involve culturing of bacteria, resistance phenotyping, gene expression studies in bacteria, various methods related to recombinant DNA-technology such as vector construction, cloning and expression of exogenous proteins in Escherichia coli, protein characterization etc. Bioinformatic competence is already present within the project. The work also include authoring/co-authoring scientific publications, presenting research at international scientific conferences and contribute to teaching at the institute up to 15% of full time
Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Assessment
PhD in relevant area, good scientific production in relation to the time passed since completing PhD, a high degree of independence including extensive experience of practical molecular analyses with relevant methods, experience from research with antibiotic resistance, excellent communicative skills particularly regarding verbal and written scientific English, a developed way of critical thinking, expertise that complements that of other group members, ability to work successfully in a group, prior postdoc experience as well as teaching experience is a merit.
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
