RISE is an independent state-owned research institute offering unique expertise and 100 test and demonstration environments for future-proof technologies, products, and services.
www.ri.seThe RISE division ICT is now looking for a postdoctorial researcher transiently powered embedded systems
To strengthen the research within networked embedded systems, the SICS unit within RISE ICT is currently looking for a postdoctorial researcher to join the Networked Embedded Systems Group (NES) within the Computer Systems Laboratory (CSL) in the Kista office.
Background
Networked embedded systems are very often devices with sensing or actuation capabilities that are networked using low-power radios. Often these devices are powered by batteries and careful energy management as well as tailored networking protocols are needed to increase the lifetime of the nodes and the networks. A group of such devices is only powered by harvesting energy from the environment, for example, wind, solar or biomass. Since these energy sources are erratic and unpredictable, these devices may run out of energy. In order to avoid the loss of state, these devices usually perform checkpointing, i.e., they save their state on memory before they are running out of energy, so they can restore it when energy is available again.
The Networked Embedded Systems Group (NES) performs cutting-edge research in networked embedded systems. The group is widely known for its systems outcomes in terms of the Contiki operating system as well as the simulation tools COOJA, MSPSim and LoRaSim. These tools are widely used in both academia and industry all over the world. Our research is experimental in that we develop prototypes and evaluate them experimentally. The lab currently has 2 professors, 2 PhDs and several other mostly senior researchers. While publishing at the top conferences in the area, we also work closely with Swedish and international industry.
Qualifications
We are primarily looking for a postdoctorial researcher with a Ph.D. degree in a relevant subject (such as computer science, computer engineering, systems engineering, or similar). A strong academic track record is highly valued. RISE strives for a diversified workforce, and therefore we especially encourage female applicants and applicants with an international background. All projects require co-operation; hence it is essential to have an excellent social ability.
The following non-exhaustive list shows areas of expertise which are of particular interest for the positions:
• Transiently powered embedded systems
• Programming abstractions for networked embedded systems
• Low-level computing
• Checkpointing
• Security
As a postdoctorial researcher at the CSL lab, you are expected to independently carry out projects, in close cooperation with industrial and academic partners. You must be able to independently define and carry out research tasks. You are supposed write up and present your results to the scientific and industrial communities.
Location
The position is placed in the main office of RISE SICS in Kista.
Position and start date
We offer a full time, 6-months position. Applications will be evaluated after the deadline.
