This project facilitates increased use of renewable energy power production by analyzing and demonstrating the wind turbine's ability to provide frequency and voltage control services to the electrical grid. The project offers a unique possibility to not only develop algorithms in a simulation setting, but also to implement them in the field using Chalmers research wind turbine.

Information about the project and the division
The division of Dynamics at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences is seeking a new postdoctoral researcher in the area of wind turbine dynamics. The target of the research is to investigate how ancillary services (such as frequency and voltage control) should be considered in the turbine control system in order to find trade-off between power production, providing ancillary services, and turbine fatigue life. This trade-off shall be analyzed considering external and internal factors, such as turbine structural and electrical properties, wind conditions, grid requirements etc. The research will be carried out using wind turbine system simulation tools and own coding of control algorithm. Furthermore, the developed algorithm shall be demonstrated in operation using Chalmers research wind turbine (16 m diameter, 30 m hub height, 45kW rated power).

The position is funded by a grant from the Swedish Energy Agency entitled "Wind power with voltage-, and frequency support as well as island mode: In-operation demonstration of novel methods". The research project is carried out in cooperation with the Department of Electrical Engineering (at Chalmers) and RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden).

The postdoctoral will be employed at the Division of Dynamics at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2). The division of Dynamics houses a mixture of theoretical and applied research, within solid dynamics problems such as vibrational problems, fatigue, wear, contact mechanics, wave propagation, optimization and dynamics of smart materials.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility will be to pursue the research and development within the project. You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas and concepts, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will be guided by senior researchers at the division of Dynamics and collaborate with the project partners. Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in the research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate or/and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

The position is a full-time temporary employment with a competitive salary and with social benefits. It is limited to two and a half years, starting with a one-year employment, followed by an evaluation. If the work is proceeding sufficiently well the employment will be extended.

Qualifications
To qualify as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the current project, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).

• You have a strong interest in Structural Dynamics modeling and simulation as well as Control Engineering
• You have a substantial experience from wind turbine dynamics research
• You like to work in interdisciplinary projects and you have the ability to discuss and communicate your work with people of different backgrounds

We also believe that you are a motivated person, with a strong curiosity and a genuine wish to learn more and develop your skills and knowledge further in the fields of research, research communication and project management.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment.
