Motion of the ground can cause damage to roads, railways, bridges and other transport infrastructure. To avoid safety risks and expensive interruptions in the transport system, ground motion should be monitored. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) can provide frequent measurements and long term monitoring of ground motion for urban areas. Can InSAR provide the same capability also for natural terrain?

Information about the division and the department
The Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing conducts research, education, and utilization within a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines, using ground-based and satellite measurements, and numerical modeling. The division's goal is to improve understanding of the Earth system and global current and future environmental problems, as well as to provide and interpret global datasets relevant to these topics. We want to provide scientific knowledge and tools to tackle problems of importance to society, such as climate change, atmospheric air pollution, and the mapping of natural resources or natural hazards.

Information about the project
Most ground displacement maps are based on the PS-InSAR technique, which works well for areas with many hard surfaces, like cities, but less well for areas with a lot of vegetation. The aim of the project is to analyze if the SBAS-InSAR technique can generate displacement maps for existing or planned transport infrastructure located in non-urban and partly vegetated areas. The feasibility to develop a monitoring system that integrates both PS- and SBAS-InSAR techniques should be assessed. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration and the Department of Technology and Society at Lund University

Major responsibilities
As post-doctoral researcher you will perform your own research in a research group and in collaboration with members of the project team. You will be responsible for:
• Collection and processing of SAR data
• Production of displacement maps with SBAS-InSAR and PS-InSAR for a number of Swedish test areas
• Evaluation of how SBAS-InSAR can improve accuracy of displacement estimation and increase the coverage and density of displacement maps for construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure in non-urban and vegetated areas
• Assessment of the feasibility to develop a displacement monitoring system that integrates PS-InSAR and SBAS-InSAR to achieve improved accuracy and increased coverage and density of displacement maps.

As post-doctoral researcher you will also:
• Write project reports and scientific papers related to the tasks above.
• Present project results at project meetings and external conferences.

The position may also include 20% of teaching responsibilities on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
To qualify for the postion you must:

• have a doctoral degree in radar remote sensing, electrical engineering, geophysics, physics or related disciplines and you must have a solid background in mathematics, physics and programming
• have working experience of processing and analysis of synthetic aperture radar data
• have sound verbal and written communication skills in English
• have a genuine interest and curiosity in the research field

Experience with detection or monitoring of ground motion (e.g. caused by Earth quakes, subsidence or glacier flow) is a merit.

You must hold a doctoral degree at the time when the employment starts, and the degree must be awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*. The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
