The Swedish Museum of Natural History's position is to be the Research Museum that shows the way. We offer a dynamic environment where many different professions and skills work together. The museum is responsible for world-unique natural history collections that are constantly growing and developing. The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a research museum and one of the country's most popular destinations. Successful research and important environmental monitoring are carried out here. We have over eleven million objects in the collections, which form the basis for our successful research in geology, palaeontology, zoology, botany, and the spread of environmental toxins in nature. The Swedish Museum of Natural History also offers a leading forum for meetings between researchers and between science and the public.

Do you want to become one of us and contribute to developing an organization that, after more than 250 years, seethes with curiosity, spirit of discovery and creativity?

At the Swedish Museum of Natural Historys Palaeobiology Department (PAL), we have approximately 15 employees. Research at the department involves questions about the origin of life on earth and the evolution of animals and plants through time, with emphasis on the origin and evolution of Cenozoic vertebrates, Palaeozoic invertebrates and seed plants. We employ interdisciplinary approaches, such as palaeontology, sedimentology, and biogeochemistry to resolve questions about the ancient past. We study the structure of fossil plants and animals, undertake taxonomic studies, and utilize the diversity and specialized adaptations of past life to interpret and reconstruct ancient ecosystems.

We also aim to answer questions about how ecosystems responded to global crises and how they recovered after catastrophic mass extinctions. Our research addresses climate change through geological time and its relationship to biodiversity changes. PAL manages over 2 million items in our collections.

We are looking to fill the position of Postdoctoral Researcher in Organic Geochemistry and Molecular Palaeontology. The fellowship will be jointly hosted by The Swedish Museum of Natural History, Dept. of Paleobiology, Lund University, Dept. of Biology and Curtin University (Australia), with the successful applicant undertaking all work at NRM PAL (Stockholm, Sweden).

WORK TASKS
The research undertaken as part of this fellowship will include organic geochemistry and palaeontology. This will be accomplished by utilising techniques such as biomarker analyses by sophisticated mass spectrometry, such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, compound specific isotope analyses, hydropyrolysis, Raman spectroscopy and mass spectrometry tools such TOF-SIMS. The research conducted under this fellowship will aim to lead the development and application of these novel methods in addressing major scientific questions in evolution and recovery of life across extinction boundary events and establishing important molecular profiles of fossil material that are exceptionally well preserved in geological samples. Furthermore, the applicant may be involved in lipid analyses of modern plant material from controlled chamber experiments.

Based at PAL, this research will be aimed at developing a deeper and more dynamic understanding of paleo-ecosystem change and important molecular insights into biomolecules and biomarkers that are present in exceptional well-preserved fossils to advance the palaeobiology field at a fundamental level. The research topics will comprise the development and evolution of life, biodiversity, environmental research, or landscape ecology. From a methodological perspective, examples of such research include analyses of large-scale data within phylogenetics, population genetics or metagenomics, as well as image analysis or research on morphological and distributional data.

QUALIFICATIONS
The applicant must have completed a doctoral degree in Sweden or an equivalent degree from another country at the time the appointment commences. For instance, PhD under examination at the time of application is permitted.
This postdoctoral fellowship is aimed at early career researchers who have recently completed a PhD (within 1 year) or are in their final year of a PhD degree.

The applicant must have experience in specialised mass spectrometry training in TOF-SIMS. The applicant will have an in-depth knowledge of analytical chemistry and chemistry, and documented knowledge of working with organic fossil material.

OTHER
The applications should be written in Arial (font size 11, and 2.5 cm margins) and must include the following:
1. A Curriculum Vitae comprising maximum three pages, which includes details on the PhD degree and the applicant's previous and current employments.
2. A scanned copy of the PhD degree certificate or a letter from supervisor confirming PhD is under examination.
3. A full publication list with all author names included. At the start of the publication list, the applicant should list selected papers relevant for the application and briefly (maximum four lines) describe the applicant's contribution to each paper.
4. Contact details for two references.

Ersättning
