We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in Mathematical/Computational Systems Biology for a fixed-term 50% appointment, during at least 2 years at the School of Medical Sciences. The current position is announced in alliance with Linköping University, at which a corresponding postdoctoral position of 50% will be announced for collaboration within the X-HiDE consortium hosted by Örebro University. This position requires the applicant to be employed by both Örebro and Linköping University, therefore applicants are required to apply for the positions at both Universities.

Subject area
The subject area for this position is Biomedicine.

Background
Inflammation constitutes a critical component of many common diseases, such as cancer, mental illness, autoimmune disease, metabolic diseases, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Current research reveals a profound lack of a mechanistic understanding of different forms of inflammation, and how these constitute specific or general interactions with common diseases. The current position is part of a larger project (X-HiDE - Exploring Inflammation in Health and Disease) aimed at using a systems biology approach to investigate inflammatory mechanisms.

More information can be found at: www.oru.se/X-HiDE

The project will build and investigate mathematical and mechanistic models of inflammatory processes on various scales, based on dynamical data produced from in vitro models and human clinical data. The project is transdisciplinary and includes business partners in the Life Science/Pharmaceutical industry. This project is hosted by the Inflammatory Response and Infection Susceptibility Center (iRiSC) at Örebro University, which, together with the Functional Bioinformatics group, will be the main affiliation for the position. Örebro University is one of the most expansive universities in Sweden, and was most recently placed as number 84 when Times Higher Education ranked the young universities in the world, and as number 160 among all universities in the world when looking at the citation rate per se.

Duties and responsibilities
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons, who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills. The applicant will be responsible for developing and investigating dynamical mathematical models based on experimental data available within X-HiDE relevant for a variety of mechanisms at different scales of inflammation. This involves collaborations with both academic and industrial partners within the X-HiDE project. For instance, the project will involve collaborations with AstraZeneca, to develop models based on their in vitro, microphysiological systems, and translations to human, clinical data. The project will also include collaborations with Wolfram MathCore, where educational material and tools are developed, which use inflammation-related models in education. The applicant will engage in tight discussion for hypothesis development, model specification and adaptation, as well as generation of model predictions in close collaboration with experimentally working biomedical researchers and clinicians.
