The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Division
The research at the Unit of Epidemiology is focused on advancing knowledge about disease etiology and prognosis with an emphasis on environmental and lifestyle factors, and on methodological development and stringency.

The research is based on large register based cohorts, as well as cohorts and case-control studies with extensive information from questionnaires and biological samples. We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher for a temporary position, maximum 2 years.

Duties
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to conduct epidemiologic research within any of the areas: public health epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, cardiovascular epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology or relevant clinical epidemiology. The postdoc is also expected to participate as teacher in epidemiology both at the Master level and at the Doctoral program in Epidemiology.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

To be eligible the applicant must:

1. Have a PhD in medical science in the area of epidemiology, or have the defense scheduled within 3 months after the application deadline.
2. Have formal education in epidemiology and statistics
3. Have experience in handling large databases

Applications are invited from talented and enthusiastic applicants with good knowledge in public health epidemiology or clinical epidemiology and register-based research, with advanced knowledge in the field of epidemiology and biostatistics. Experience of supervision of PhD or masters students is meritorious, as is formal pedagogical training, and experience with the statistical software packages SAS and Stata. It is also considered meritorious to have prior experience working in research, like doctoral level education, outside of IMM. The applicant should have strong oral and written communication skills in English and will need to both feel comfortable with working in teams and demonstrate good interpersonal skills and also be independent enough to formulate new hypotheses and critically examine the results. The successful applicant will be proactive and will have the ability to use their initiative to contribute to on going development of the group.

A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

- Cover letter
- A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
- A complete list of publications
- A summary of current work (no more than one page)
- Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
- Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
