We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in Biomedicine for a fixed-term position for 24 months with a possibility of extension at the School of Medical Sciences.

Subject area
The subject area for this position is Medical Sciences, with a special focus on Biomedicine/Host-bacterial interaction.

Background
The position is within the Infection & inflammation research group at Örebro University.

Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) is the most common bacteria to cause urinary tract infections (UTI). Post-menopausal women have an increased risk of recurrent UTIs. This is partly explained by reduced estrogenic effects on host defenses against UTIs. Estrogen replacement therapy was shown to be able to reduce the number of episodes of UTI in menopausal women. However, we do not know today if estrogen replacement therapy would help clear an already ongoing UPEC mediated UTI in menopausal women. Current research is mostly focused on how UPEC affects host factors, but not so much is known about how host factors like estrogen affect UPEC virulence.

The overall aim of the project is to investigate the impact of estradiol and testosterone exposure on the virulence of Uropathogenic E. coli and the outcome of an UTI.

Duties and responsibilities
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills.

The applicant will be involved in formulating and testing the scientific hypothesis with experimental work, presentations, and preparation of publications. The applicant will be responsible for research, academic and administrative activities and expected to adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques, test hypothesis and analyse data from a variety of sources.

The applicant will work on in vitro experiments conducted with E. coli, urinary tract epithelium and lymphocytes. In vivo mouse UTI experiment will also be conducted. Basic technical skills like cell culture, ELISA, Western blot, RT-qPCR etc is a requirement. This study will be conducted in close collaboration with two Swedish companies in the life science sector. A very important skill is experience conducting research evaluating the direct effects of hormones on UPEC virulence.
