The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. Division
The Neuroepidemiology group at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet is dedicated to understanding the causes and disease mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

Area of responsibilities/description of the work
This research program aims specifically to gain a comprehensive understanding of how different physiological processes such as metabolism and immunity contribute synergistically to the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This research work will include 1) a population-based case-control study with rich clinical information and multiple biosamples and 2) animal work using mouse models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The postdoctoral researcher should have a firm grounding in experimental science in the field of immunology or related disciplines, have experience in analyzing human and animal biospecimens, and be interested in contributing to an interdisciplinary research group.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD degree in medical science and have experience in doing immunological research using human biospecimens and animal materials and in working with mouse models. Some knowledge of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is desirable. A track record in writing scientific publications in English is preferred. The applicant should be highly collegial, experienced in working in multidisciplinary context, possess exceptional communication and organizational skills, know how to successfully multitask, and should be able to describe past examples of having developed structured approaches to solving unanticipated and complex problems. Individuals eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral researcher should have completed their PhD studies within the last three years. Individuals who graduated earlier could be considered under special circumstances.

The position is for 2 years with the possibility of extension.
