Mid Sweden University welcomes applications for the post of
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
at the Department of Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics
Ref. no. MIUN 2010/1252
Subject area: Strength of materials often fluctuates statistically, and depends on the size of the specimens and also the time during which mechanical and environmental loads are applied. The particular subject area of this opening is the statistical aspects of the materials strength, especially the failure of wet paper on papermachine and the failure of corrugated board box under creep conditions. In the first area the web break phenomena are rare, but we try to predict such rare break events by determining scaling behaviour of wet strength experimentally and by developing probabilistic models. In the second area, the creep life of the corrugated containers also fluctuates, and the challenge is to describe and predict the stochastic failure phenomena, particularly the lower tail of the creep life distributions, in terms of experimentally measurable material parameters. Depending on the background and competency areas of the candidate, we may define one of the above subject areas accordingly.
Job description: The candidate is expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work in the above subject areas, analyse the results, and disseminate the conclusions to both academic and industrial communities.
Eligibility: PhD in physical sciences and engineering. Proficiency in programming languages and experimental work background are necessary.
Place of work: The post is based in Sundsvall.
Scope: 100%
Start date: Immediate.
