The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Neurochemistry laboratory at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology conducts neurochemical research targeted to understand the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. An important goal is to identify protein changes linked to the pathophysiology, known as biomarkers, and to understand the mechanisms that lead to protein aggregation and processing into fragments, and how these can be linked to disease pathogenesis.

SPECIFIC SUBJECT DESCRIPTION: The position is linked to projects to study the biochemistry behind protein aggregation and processing in Alzheimer's disease and to identify and develop new biochemical markers in cerebrospinal fluid and in plasma/serum. Analytical techniques include expression and purification of recombinant proteins, generation of protein oligomers, analysis of proteins by immunoassays including e.g. the Cobas 6000 instrument, chromatographic techniques incl. different HPLC systems, mass spectrometric analyses, development and validation of novel protein immunoassays.

JOB ASSIGNMENTS: Duties include working with protein chemistry methods, including electrophoresis, HPLC methods for proteins, physicochemical methods of protein aggregation, mass spectrometry, and antibody-based analysis and development of immunassays. The postdoc is expected to independently compile the results for publication.

ELIGIBILITY: The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Qualified for appointment as postdoctoral research fellow (forskarassistent) is a person who has been awarded a PhD degree in protein chemistry, physical chemistry focused on protein aggregation, neurochemistry or have achieved equivalent academic qualifications. Priority should be given to candidates who have been awarded a PhD degree or achieved equivalent qualifications no more than seven years before the application deadline.

ASSESSMENT: Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. In assessing the applicants qualifications great importance will be attached to research experience in the field of Alzheimer's disease, ß-amyloid and tau protein metabolism and protein aggregation. Knowledge and experience in protein chemical and neurochemical methodology as described above is qualifying. Ability to independently process data and write scientific publications is essential, as is the ability to be flexible and able to work independently. Experience of collaborations with other research groups is a merit. Administrative skills will also be considered. Applicants without education in higher education pedagogics are expected to undertake such within one year of taking up employment.
