Beskrivning av verksamheten
At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry. The position as postdoctoral research fellow will be shared between the research units for Neuropsychiatric Epidemiology (EPINEP) and Neurochemistry, which both are part of Center for Aging and Health (AGECAP). EPINEP studies health and psychiatric well-being in older indviduals (over 65 years) from the general population. To do this the research group collects a lot of data related to cognitive, psychiatric and somatic function, as well as neurochemical and genetic factors. An important part of the research is to study changes over time. The Neurochemistry unit performs research in order to understand the pathophysiology behind Alzheimers disease.

Dina arbetsuppgifter
SPECIFIC SUBJECT DESCRIPTION: The elderly make up the fastest growing segment of the population. Dementia and psychiatric disorders are common in these age groups, and constitute a large health care problem for society and individuals. The health of older individuals is influenced by a number of factors, and genetic factors represent one part. The aim of the project is to investigate which genetic factors that can be of importance for the health of older individuals, and which genes that are of importance for the association between somatic, mental and cognitive health among these individuals. JOB ASSIGNMENTS: The postdoctoral research fellow will be responsible for all genetic research projects within the research unit, from design of projects to final manuscripts, and also supervision of PhD- and master-students who work with projects involving genetic studies. ELIGIBILITY: Qualified for appointment as postdoctoral research fellow (forskarassistent) is a person who has been awarded a PhD degree in Medicine or related fields or have achievd equivalent academic qualifications. Priority should be given to candidates who have been awarded a PhD degree or achieved equivalent qualifications no more than seven years before the application deadline.

Utbildning och erfarenhet
ASSESSMENT: Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. The primary assessment criterion is scientific skills, especially scientific productivity (in terms of published articles) and the ability to independently conduct genetic studies (based both on theoretical and experimental experience). The second assessment criterion is pedagogical skills, especially teaching experience. Education in higer education pedagogics is very meritorious. In assessing the applicants qualifications great importance will be attached to several years of experience working with genetic association studies in the field of neuropsychiatry and neurodegenerative disorders; theoretical skills (such as knowledge about study design, statistical analysis and genome databases); experimental skills (such as experience of working experimentally with gene analyses and handling of DNA and blood samples); experience in epidemiological, psychiatric and geriatric research as well as working with population studies and experience in analysing longitudinal data. A master of science in Chemistry, Molecular Biology or related fields is preferred. Special attention will be given to personal qualities, such as ability to cooperate, especially together with various research groups. Administrative skills will also be considered.
