The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The position is located in the group of Fredrik Bäckhed at the Wallenberg Laboratory for Cardiovascular and Clinical Medicine. The lab is well set up for metabolic studies and Bäckhed research group has specialized on research delineating the role of the microbiota in metabolic disease.
SPECIFIC SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
The gut microbiota affects health and disease and is a central research theme at the Wallenberg laboratory, which focuses on metabolic and cardiovascular disease. One of the prioritized areas are studies on how the gut microbiota contributes to these diseases as well as studies elucidating factors contributing to an altered microbial composition and function. Diet has a profound effect on the gut microbiota composition and functionality and can thus modulate diseases. The overall purpose with the research conducted is to increase the knowledge and expertise on diet and microbiota, and to develop new preventive and treatment strategies for metabolic diseases.
JOB ASSIGNMENTS
The purpose of the position is to contribute with expertise on how the gut microbiota interacts with our diet, including on functional level, and how this interaction affects metabolism in the host. Establish and develop independent research within the field and supervise PhD students. Limited teaching at undergraduate and graduate level. Participate in research projects with national and international partners and present own research at conferences.
ELIGIBILITY
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Qualified for the position as postdoctoral research fellow (forskarassistent) is a applicant who has been awarded a PhD in microbiology or have achieved equivalent academic qualifications. Priority should be given to candidates who have been awarded a PhD or achieved equivalent qualifications no more than seven years before the application deadline.
ASSESSMENT
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. The primary assessment criterion is scientific skills and international scientific training. In the assessment essential importance will be given to applicants who has significant experience in analyzing the gut microbiota composition, isolate and culture anaerobic bacteria and test them in vivo gnotobiotic animal models. Proven experience in research involving translational studies on diet-gut is a requirement. Experience working with in vitro models of the gut and experience in performing RNA-SIP (RNA-Stable Isotope Probing) to study microbial metabolism of macronutrients in vitro and in vivo is strongly desirable. The second assessment criterion is ability to collaborate and work in a team is essential as the research is conducted as part of a larger team. See description about the position on the University of Gothenburgs homepage job opportunities.
