Postdoctoral position/Senior scientist
Host plant choice mechanisms and the role of volatile plant compounds for insect invasions
SLU is an international university, world class in life and environmental sciences. We are ranked among the Top 100 of ca 5,000 European universities. We have a strong research
focus, but we also offer some of Sweden's most in-demand educations; veterinarian, forester, and landscape architect.
SLU has close to 3,000 employees and some 5,000 students. Annual turnover is SEK 2.7 billion, and activities are concentrated to the main campuses in Uppsala, Alnarp, Umeå and Skara.

The post-doc/senior scientist will work within a project funded from the European Science Foundation (ESF), InvaVol: Consequences of insect invasions for plant-insect interactions
mediated by volatile organic compounds. This project involves six research groups within Europe that will work different aspects of this theme. The subject for the Alnarp group and
for this position is to investigate how plant volatiles influence host plant choice mechanisms in insects. The project is also connected to a 10 year Linnaeus project (2006-2016), Insect
ecology, Ethology and Evolution, currently running at the Division of Chemical ecology. Within the research group we study a wide spectrum of questions from behaviours to insect
neurophysiology and genetics. The project would offer rich opportunities to perform combinatory studies elucidating mechanisms behind host plant choice. The position also
gives excellent possibilities for international cooperation within the ESF-project, but also with other research groups.
Duties: The position will include both behavioural and physiological studies, primarily in the main model organism, the Egyptian cotton leaf worm moth Spodoptera littoralis. More
specifically: 1. Behavioural studies on the effect by plant volatiles on attraction and oviposition; 2. Decision-making processes based on innate and experienced cues; 3.
Peripheral electrophysiology to identify active compounds; 4. Physiological measurements of responses in the central nervous system;
Qualifications: A prerequisite for this position is a PhD degree in ecology or entomology-related fields. Candidates should be fluent in spoken and written English. Experience with wind tunnel and other behavioural techniques, electrophysiology and/or optical imaging constitute a merit.
Form of employment: Temporary employment, 2 years at full time
Extent: 100%
Starting date: By agreement
SLU is an equal opportunity employer.
