Low-dimensional materials are highly desirable for efficient device integration, and the intrinsic coupling between electric polarization and magnetism in magnetoelectrics could revolutionize storage and information technologies. In this project, the applicant will combine symmetry analysis, electronic structure calculations, and high-throughput database screening to predict promising new material candidates. The position is for two years, with a start date of January 2026.
About the research project
The position is part of the collaborative initiative "Symmetry-guided realization of low-dimensional magnetoelectric quantum magnets", funded by the Nanoscience Area of Advance at Chalmers, together with the groups of Daniel Weber (Chemistry, Chalmers) and Saroj Dash (Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Chalmers). The overall goal of the initiative is to predict, realize, and characterize new monolayer, layered, and heterostructure quantum magnets with functional, high-temperature magnetoelectric coupling. The theory position in the group of Sophie Weber will focus on (a) development of group-theoretical methods to rapidly identify and design candidate low-dimensional magnetoelectrics; (b) evaluation of their magnetoelectric properties using density functional theory (DFT) and related computational methods; and (c) advancing theories of novel magnetoelectric coupling, particularly those related to chiral magnetism.
Who we are looking for
We seek candidates with the following qualifications:
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree (or will hold one before the start of the position on January 1, 2026). The doctoral degree must have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.*
Experience with electronic structure calculations, in particular DFT, as well as basic knowledge of group-theory, are essential. Familiarity with data mining and/ or high-throughput DFT calculations is desirable but not essential. The candidate should be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and contribute to a supportive working environment. The candidate should be willing to interact collaboratively on a regular basis with the experimental groups in the initiative.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement, but willingness to learn is strongly encouraged. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.
What you will do
1. Develop and implement group-theory-based codes to identify potential low-symmetry magnetoelectrics
2. Develop workflows for high-throughput screening of material candidates in crystal databases
3. Perform DFT calculations using VASP to evaluate magnetic and electronic properties of material candidates
4. Use Quantum Monte Carlo and/or renormalized spin wave theory to estimate magnetic ordering temperatures
5. Interact collaboratively with the experimental groups in the initiative to realize the synthesis and characterization of promising candidates.
6. Communicate results through publishing in scientific journals and presenting at international conferences.
