Thermonuclear fusion is one of very few long-term solutions for a sustainable base load electricity production with negligible environmental impact and minimal security and safety concern. We are now looking for a new team member to join our research team to help advance the understanding of turbulence and transport in the plasma under reactor conditions - a critical part in the design and exploitation of the next step fusion experiments.

Information about the division and the department
The Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy (PPFE) group at the Space, Earth and Environment/Astronomy and Plasma physics division has its main activities in modelling, simulation and analysis of tokamak plasmas. A major part of the work is towards the establishment of a predictive capability of turbulent transport for fusion energy grade plasmas and model validation towards current experiments. The group has extensive collaborations with major fusion devices and are taking part in the developments for the ITER experiment and the design of the demonstration reactor, DEMO. The activities are fully integrated with the European (EUROfusion) activities and the research group also engages in the development of open data access for fusion experiments and modelling data.

Major responsibilities
The successful applicant is expected to perform simulations with modelling tools for research relating to scenario development of fusion grade reactors. The research group is pursuing research in two complementary areas: integrated modelling of plasma scenarios and analysis of turbulent transport with gyro-kinetic models. The two activities are tied together with use and development of reduced quasilinear models in the predictive modelling such as TGLF, QuaLiKiz and EDWM. The fusion community has developed a wide range of turbulent transport models with varying degree of physics fidelity and by validating them towards present devices and ab-initio modelling tools we can learn to extrapolate them towards future reactors.

The research will be performed in an international environment connecting with the major fusion research experiments in Europe and beyond. You are also expected to develop own ideas and find your own ways in tackling research challenges in international collaborations. The position may include some supervision of student projects.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field (electrical engineering, computer science, physics or similar) or equivalent; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You should have some demonstrated knowledge of computational methods and programming.

Experience of integrated modelling frameworks, such as ETS, JINTRAC, or ASTRA and/or experience with gyro-kinetic theory/codes and quasi-linear transport codes is meritous.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for an initial 2 years and can be extended with a one year pending available funds.
