Breeding of low-methane rice varieties by genome-editing
A postdoctoral position for two years and with immediate access is available at the Department of Plant Biology, BioCenter, SLU, Uppsala, Sweden. It is a position of two years. The department has an excellent and stimulating work environment with an internationally high quality. The department (
http://www.slu.se/institutioner/vaxtbiologi-skogsgenetik/) does, together with other departments from SLU and Uppsala University, form the Uppsala BioCenter (
http://www.slu.se/biocentrum) and Linnean Center for Plant Biology (
http://lcpu.se/). Methane (CH4) is the second most important greenhouse gas (GHG) after carbon dioxide (CO2). Rice paddies are one of the largest CH4 emission sources on land. Over 50% of the human population eats rice as a staple food. As the population grows, rice agriculture will expand to meet the food demand and lead to an even worse GHG problem for the ongoing climate change. At SLU, we have developed a new rice variety to reduce methane emissions from paddies (Su et al. 2015, Nature 523, 602-606). The new rice variety is able to suppress methane emissions over 90% from rice paddies with a yield increase of at least 10%. However, the rice variety is a genetically modified (GM) variety and a non-GM low-methane rice variety is urgently needed for the rice agriculture. For our research please visit our website (
http://www.slu.se/en/chuanxin_sun). Duties:
You will work in a collaborative project with microbiology. Previously we have found a repressive element in rice genome that limits rice seed-sinking strength. We hypothesize that removal of the element will enhance rice seed-sinking strength and lead to less root exudates and less methane emissions from paddies. You will use the CRISPR technology to delete the repressive element in rice genome and follow the traits in the edited rice plants. You will also work with a PhD student in screening of low-methane rice varieties. You will communicate with our rice breeding partners in the rice-producing country for collaborations and field trials. You will keep a close communication with a postdoc who will work in microbiology and rice-microbe/methanogen interaction.
Qualifications:
Applicants should be dedicated to science and should also be highly motivated. Knowledge, experience, technical skills and good publication in studies of cereal/rice cultivation, cereal/rice crossbreeding, cereal/rice tissue culture and transformation, plant genome-editing and plant-microbe interaction will be considered as good merits. Good communication skills in english is expected. You should have a PhD degree in plant science. As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
The application should include: 1) An application letter with motivation and interest, 2) CV with a summary of previous achievements and publications, 3) Two reference persons, and 4) PhD diploma/certificate.
