We are hiring a postdoc in Phytopathology for the EU project WildCrop which aims to develop a new concept ("breeding for biocontrol of phytopathogens") to simultaneously optimize crop resistance and microbial biocontrol, leading to more synergies and fewer trade-offs between resistance and biocontrol.
About the position
The postdoc will be based at SLU Alnarp in Sweden and work closely together with local project members as well as with partners in Italy (University of Udine) and Spain (University of Málaga).
The main part of the postdoctoral project will be to investigate continental variation in the interactions between the wild host plant Fragaria vesca (woodland strawberry), two plant pathogens (Botrytis cinerea, causing grey mould, and Colletotrichum acutatum, causing anthracnose disease), and one microbial "bodyguard" (the yeast like microbe Aureobasidium pullulans). The postdoc will screen plants collected from across Europe for their resistance to pathogens. Thereafter, the candidate will screen A. pullulans strains collected from the same places for their capacity to antagonize the pathogens. Finally, the postdoc will develop a model for "matchmaking" between plants and "bodyguards" to create new knowledge on how to combine plant resistance and biocontrol for optimal control of plant pathogens.
The project will include both lab work (in vitro) as well as filed/greenhouse work (in vivo).
Bioclimatic factors will be used to investigate the role of climatic factors on the distribution of plant resistance and biocontrol potential across Europe.
Your profile
Applicants must have a PhD in Phytopathology, Microbial Ecology/Evolution, Biology or similar subject. Documented hands-on experience of work related to the study organisms Fragaria vesca and/or Aureobasidium pullulans will be highly meriting in the evaluation of candidates. Likewise, documented experience in bioclimatic modelling is meritorious. The successful candidate is likely to have a strong interest in evolutionary ecology, evolutionary applications and integrated pest management.
Personal qualities such as ability to collaborate well with local and international partners are necessary.
As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.
About us
The postdoctoral position will be based at the Department of Plant Protection Biology at SLU. This department is an interdisciplinary constellation where the units of Integrated Plant Protection, Chemical Ecology and Resistance Biology work to develop sustainable and innovative methods to meet the challenge of securing future plant protection.
Apart from local work, the postdoc is expected to actively and constructively participate in meetings with the other international partners in the WildCrop project. These meetings will occasionally require travelling.

Through our focus on the interaction between humans, animals and ecosystems and the responsible use of natural resources, we contribute to sustainable societal development and good living conditions on our planet. Our main campuses are located in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala, however, the university also operates at research stations, experimental forests and teaching sites throughout Sweden.
SLU has around 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and doctoral students and a turnover of over SEK 3 billion. We are investing in attractive environments on all of our campuses. We strive to provide a work environment characterised by inclusivity and gender equality, where different experiences generate conversations between people and pave the way for science, creativity and development. Therefore, we welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
