hela Sverige Södertörns högskola (Södertörn University) in south Stockholm is a dynamic institute of higher education with a unique profile and high academic standard. A large proportion of the university staff holds doctorates and there is a strong link between undergraduate education and research. Södertörn University currently has 13 000 students and 850 employees.
Undergraduate and postgraduate education and research are conducted in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Technology and Education. Our site is in Flemingsberg.
Södertörn University is an equal opportunities employer.
The research area of Environmental Studies at Södertörn University is home to multidisciplinary research on the environment, using approaches from the social and natural sciences. Projects typically involve researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds collaborating on mutual research problem. In addition to more than 15 senior researchers, Environmental Studies currently has 20 doctoral students, as well as Bachelor's and Master's programs in Environmental Science. Environmental Studies at Södertörn University offers a rich and inspiring environment due to numerous discipline overarching projects, the large number of doctoral students and the mix of scholars from different backgrounds.
We are now inviting applications for a shorter (6 months) postdoctoral position in Environmental Science as part of internal funding to support experimental research.
The work will be conducted in collaboration with Mikael Lönn (oospores), Elinor Andrén (diatoms) and Thomas Andrén (sedimentology). In our laboratories we work with molecular ecology in fish, mussels and algae as well as meta-genomics and sedimentology/biostratigraphy on sediment cores.
Areas of responsibility
The successful candidate is expected to conduct research aiming at isolating and analyzing DNA from diatom resting spores and Chara oospores collected from Baltic Sea sediment cores to evaluate how genetic structure changes through time. The results of the DNA analyzes will be compared with existing paleoecological results (e.g. conducted within the project UPPBASER) to evaluate and strengthen previous environmental interpretations.
The primary expected outcomes are: (a) an evaluation of the quality of genetic information that is possible to collect when going back in time using e.g. AFLP, microsatellites and/or chloroplast DNA (b) datasets for two publications to be in manuscript form at the end of the six months.
Qualifications
To be eligible for the advertised position, candidates should have a Swedish doctoral degree, or an international equivalent, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline for this position. Candidates who received their doctorate more than three years before the deadline may be considered if there are exceptional circumstances; these may include leave due to illness, military service, trade union positions, students' union duties, parental leave and similar.
Application
Applications may be submitted in English or Swedish. The application should include:
• CV
• The PhD thesis
• Other publications that the applicant finds relevant (maximum five publications)
• Research plan (maximum two pages) including a literature review of population genetics in diatoms and in Chara. The research plan should also include published or unpublished methods for extracting and analyzing DNA from algae spores and a suggested work plan for how to extract and analyze DNA from diatom resting spores and Chara oospores.
Selection criteria
The candidates' documented research skills will be considered to be of particular importance.
In addition, the following criteria, in the following order, have been deemed to be particularly relevant for this position
• Documented experience of research in molecular ecology/population genetics, especially in working with difficult plant material and algae
• The quality of the research plan
Employment
The appointment is fixed term and full-time for a period of six months. It is expected to start so soon as possible after agreement. The place of work is Södertörn University located in Flemingsberg.
The closing date for applications is September 16, 2014.
