Join a young team with a strong national and international network in the field of the rapidly expanding area of metal additive manufacturing, with unique opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge and make a difference for the future by contributing to the sustainable development involving a technology for manufacture of tomorrow!

The main competences at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science are found in the areas of: Human-Technology Interaction | Form and Function | Modeling and Simulation | Product Development | Materials | Production and in the interaction between these areas. The research focuses on the development of the industrial process, from need to finished product while creating added value. To combine skills throughout the whole chain distinguishes the department both nationally and internationally. Here we gather internationally prominent researchers, in dynamic and outstanding research environments, as well as in national and international research networks.

We are a motivated research group focused on advancing metal AM in critical areas. We are seeking post-doctoral researchers interested in sinter-based metal additive manufacturing, with a focus on multi-material sintering process development and simulation. Chalmers values gender equality as essential for a positive work and study environment. One of the department's main goals is to contribute to Chalmers' gender equality efforts, emphasizing the university's core values of quality, openness, inclusion, respect, and diversity.

Originally developed for polymers and later adapted for ceramics, this technology now uses fine metal powders, enabling multi-material printing and this allows the development of multi-functional components. Although still in its early stages, it shows high potential for producing small, high-resolution components that other AM technologies cannot achieve. The PMAM group at Chalmers has a long history of sinter-based technology research, including metal binder jetting, and aims to expand the production of high-resolution, multifunctional components. As the technology is new, tailored debinding and sintering processes need to be developed to ensure necessary properties and tolerances. You will focus on material formulation, debinding and sintering process development, and sintering process simulation. The position offers great opportunities for future research in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Information about the research
The national competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metal) provides a unique possibility for academy-industry co-operation. The centre focuses on material development for powder-based metal AM technologies covering the whole AM chain, starting from the base powder through the dedicated AM process development, tailored post-AM treatment to the final component. The centre is hosted by the Division of Materials and Manufacture.

As part of several research areas which have been launched and developed, we take the next steps to further develop high-resolution and multi-material sinter-based additive manufacturing. Today the AM group at the division is among the largest groups in AM across Europe with senior researchers, post-docs and PhD students. Recently, the group was granted funding through WISE, to develop sustainable multi-material additive manufacturing WISE Research Technology Platform withing WISE Additive. Hence, there are two new installations at PMAM, namely Hammer Lab 35 from Incus GmbH and CeraFab Multi 2M30 from Lithoz GmbH providing state-of-the-art infrastructure for the intended post-doc project.

Major responsibilities
The position is connected to the broad AM activities within Powder Metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing (PMAM) group at Chalmers to directly support development and implementation of WISE Research Technology Platform at Chalmers, focusing on multi-material sinter-based AM. PMAM is also a host for competence centre CAM2 | Centre for Additive Manufacture - Metal.

• Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to perform your own research as part of the research group.
• Coordinate specific research projects within the PMAM group at Chalmers.
• Collaborate with academia, industry, and society at large.
• Possible teaching on undergraduate and master levels.
• Supervise academic and industrial users of the sinter-based infrastructure.

Qualifications

• PhD in Materials science, Material mechanics, and/or Production engineering. Degree should generally not be older than three years.
• Priority given to candidates with a relevant background in sinter-based metal additive manufacturing and sintering simulation.
• Skills in simulation of sintering processes, sintering process development, sinter-based metal additive manufacturing, materials characterization, inorganic chemistry or microscopy
• Ability to do teaching and project management and also to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not required, and Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years.
