Are you interested in assessing innovative livestock production systems? Would you like to work with a world leading international team? We are looking for an ambitious colleague, with experience in Life Cycle Assessment, to help us define future land use policies in Europe.
About the position
The PostDoc will focus on the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in European livestock systems. The PostDoc will review and select improved methods for the incorporation of environmental and animal welfare criteria within LCA models of current and future livestock systems. The work includes (1) literature review on animal health and welfare indicators and environmental and social methods used in LCA; (2) structured expert consultation following a Delphi approach, to select appropriate indicators and methods; (3) development and application of selected methods through data collection and analysis. We expect that all appointees play an active role in the development of the research environment and engage positively in the social working environment. We also expect that you will take part in our teaching activities and that you will report research results in high-impact scientific journals.
Your profile
The position is intended for a junior researcher and we are primarily looking for people who have completed their doctorate no more than three years ago. Specific requirements are outlined below:
Required:
• A PhD degree in a relevant subject (i.e. within the natural or social sciences with a substantive focus on food and/or agriculture).
• Experience of working with Life Cycle Assessment applied to agriculture.
• Awareness of and interest in animal welfare issues within livestock systems.
• Able to work independently as well as to collaborate.
• Good communication skills, including the ability to communicate and write well in English.
Merit:
• Use of Life Cycle Assessment software (e.g., SimaPro, Open LCA).
• Knowledge about the European livestock sector.
• Coding skills (R, Python).
• GIS skills (ArcGIS, QGIS).
• Experience with systematic review and expert elicitation methods.
• Knowledge about animal welfare assessment or animal welfare indicators.
• Ability to communicate and write well in Swedish.
• Holding a valid Swedish driving licence or equivalent.
About us
At the Department of Biosystems and Technology we explore interactions between soil, plants, animals, environment, climate and humans in systems for sustainable production of food and renewable raw materials. Our teaching and research deal with questions about sustainable and efficient use of limited resources for production in greenhouses, on agricultural land and in farm buildings. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the "Animal Environment and Building Function" group that studies the impact of different management systems for livestock production with special emphasis on environmental and animal welfare aspects. The research activities combine detailed studies in biology and technology of production systems with systems analyses and cross-disciplinary syntheses. The Department has a broad competence in agricultural and horticultural crop science, bio-energy, technology, animal welfare, resource use efficiency, environmental impact and food safety. We deliver research-based knowledge in teaching at basic and advanced levels and through collaboration with society, and contribute thereby to innovations, advisory services and decision making for solving complex problems.
Project
STEP UP is a Horizon Europe project running from January 2024 to December 2027 that aims to support the development of more economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable European Livestock Production Systems (ELPS). The project's 16 partners from 10 countries will actively engage in the evaluation and analysis of Innovative Livestock Production Systems (ILPS) and use the insights to upgrade traditional ELPS. The technology-driven techniques integrated in ILPs, Horticulture, and Rural Buildings and Animal Husbandry.S will lead to more informed and sustainable livestock farming, helping to improve efficiency, decrease environmental impact, and enhance animal welfare.
