Department of Biosystems and Technology
Are you interested in applied animal ethology and perceptual abilities of animals? Do you want to help us disentangle how animal emotions are modulated by their sensory environment? Then, you might be the postdoc we are looking for.
About the position
The successful candidate will be part of a team working with applied and basic ethology, animal perceptual abilities, emotions, and welfare. You will take part in the practical experimental work on farms and at research facilities. You will assist in, and conduct, ethological experiments designed for farm animals in collaboration with the team. You will collect behavioural, physiological, and neurobiological data from the experiments and help analyse the data. You will also contribute to writing and publishing the data as well as communicating the results. You will be a key-person in the team collaborating with many different partners and thus you will be expected to be engage positively, openly and flexibly with everyone involved.

Your profile
REQUIREMENTS:

• PhD in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Ethology, Behavioural Ecology or similar fields
• Experience in designing and conducting ethological tests
• Experience in collecting, handling, and analysing data (behavioural and physiological data)
• Experience managing large animals (such as pigs, cattle or horses)
• Experience writing and publishing manuscripts
• Good communication skills on several levels: academic peers, farmers, stakeholders in science, public and broarder media
• Good ability to engage in a scientific environment and openness and flexibility in planning work
• Strong abilities in written and spoken English
• Knowledge/basic understanding of a Scandinavian language (Danish, Swedish or Norwegian)

ADDITIONAL MERITS:

• A creative and curious mind is a plus
• Knowledge of neuroscience in animals is an advantage
• Drivers license
• Willingness to travel nationally and internationally

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most.

About us
At the Department of Biosystems and Technology (BT) we explore interactions between soil, plants, animals, environment, climate and humans in systems for sustainable production of food and renewable raw materials.

The research activities combine detailed studies in biology and technology of production systems with systems analyses and cross-disciplinary syntheses. The Department has a broad competence in agricultural and horticultural crop science, bio-energy, technology, animal welfare, resource use efficiency, environmental impact and food safety. We deliver research-based knowledge in teaching at basic and advanced levels and through collaboration with society, and contribute thereby to innovations, advisory services and decision making for solving complex problems.

This specific position is tied to the Animal-centered Environments group within BT. The group focusses on the impact of technology and housing environment in different management systems for livestock production with special emphasize on animal welfare but also with our environment in mind. Scientists ' expertise includes ethology, animal science, technology/engineering, veterinary medicine, and often in cooperation with subject areas: architecture, work science, economics, mathematics, computer science, statistics, etc.

Location:
This position is placed at the SLU Alnarp campus in Skåne, Sweden. However, the experimental work will be conducted close to the SLU Uppsala campus. Travelling is thus expected in this position.

Form of employment:
Temporary employment 24 months, with the possibility of extension.
