Job description
Nano-(Q)SAR for engineered nanoparticles is a novel and emerging area, which has high potential for impact, and especially to translate unique experimental results from advanced laboratory practices to the context of environmental risk assessment of nanomaterials and for other purposes of engineering interest. The present post-doc project aims to address fundamental and important aspects of QSARs, such as the choice of nanoparticle descriptors (based on both literature and experiments), their property-property relations as well as their relations to different types of activities both in "simple" experimental artificial membrane systems, as well as in more complex and living biological models. At a more specific level, the connections between descriptors and fate and effect mechanisms are of particular interest
The project aims to determine principal structural and physicochemical descriptors of nanomaterials that can lead to both (i) good quantitative structure-properties relationships (QSARs) in experimental model systems, and (ii) identification of nanoparticle properties which are problematic from an environmental perspective (persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and (eco)toxicity). The project will be partly experimental, and will involve studies of nanoparticle interactions with model lipid membranes. The project will include design of experiments, and equipment, for the advanced study of nano-QSAR, and the application of computer aided methods for the multivariate analysis of experimental data
Qualifications
The applicant should have a Ph.D. degree (normally not older than 3 years at the start of the apointment). The PhD is preferably in Engineering Physics, Nanoscience/technology, Biotechnology, Chemical engineering or Chemistry, Physics, or equivalent. Knowledge in surface sensitive analytical techniques, model lipid membranes, nanoparticle characterization and computer aided analysis of (large) multivariate datasets is a merit for the position. An interest for multidisciplinary work and experiences from collaboration over different disciplines is important. Familiarity with patent and IPR issues and an interest in, and ability to, communicate with different interested parties is qualifying for the position. A succesful candidate should demonstrate potential for teaching and research. A high proficiency in spoken and written English is a prerequisite
The following experience is expected from the candidate
• expertise in the chemico-physical area, and experience tied to nanoparticle applications
• experience from high quality scientific research
• experience from dissemination of research results, including publications in high quality scientific journals
