The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

The Unit of Work Environment Toxikology

The research at the Unit of Work Environment Toxicology at IMM covers a wide range, from basic mechanistic research in cell systems and mathematical modeling to applied research with volunteers and practical applications.

The aim is to highlight areas that are crucial for toxicological risk assessment. One central theme is physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling as a tool to describe, understand and predict the uptake and disposition of xenobiotics.

The position

The Unit of Work Environment Toxicology seeks a postdoctoral fellow in the project Toxicokinetic modeling of internal dose of zebrafish embryos. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with the supervisors Professor Gunnar Johanson and Dr Emma Vincent. The position is temporary for one year.

The zebrafish embryo (ZFE) is increasingly used as a vertebrate animal model to assess adverse effects of chemicals. The acceptance of such tests from a health risk assessment perspective relies on the possibility to extrapolate toxicity data from ZFE tests to humans, similar to the extrapolations from laboratory animals such as mice and rats carried out today. Until now, little attention has been paid to the relation between external and internal dose in fish embryos. The aim of this project is to develop a better understanding of the toxicokinetics (TK) and target dose of chemical substances in the ZFE by a combination of experimental TK studies and mathematical modeling. Understanding of the relationship between external exposure, internal dose and toxicity will lay the ground for species and stage extrapolation of toxicity, from ZFE to humans. It may thus provide for an increased acceptance of ZFE toxicity tests, with a substantial reduction in the use of higher animals (3R), as well as reduced costs and time delays in toxicity testing.

Qualification

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a degree in toxicology or biomedicine. Excellent skills in written and spoken English and in communication, as well as an ability to interact socially and scientifically with other researchers and students, are essential. Documented skills in toxicokinetic/pharmacokinetic/PBPK modelling, zebrafish handling, and analytical chemistry are highly advantageous.

Entry requirements

A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Application process

An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

- A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
- A complete list of publications
- A summary of current work (no more than one page)
- Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Its vision is to significantly contribute to the improvement of human health. Karolinska Institutet accounts for the single largest share of all academic medical research conducted in Sweden and offers the country's broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.
Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been printed or otherwise published.
