Postdoctoral position
Tobacco pollen tube transcriptom: deep sequencing and analysis

www.slu.se A 1-year postdoctoral position (full social benefits) is available in Prof. Benedikt Kost?s team at SLU/BioCenter in Uppsala to 1) employ deep sequencing by a commercial service to generate a catalog of full length cDNA sequences expressed in tobacco pollen tubes, and to 2) employ bioinformatics tools to extract valuable biological information from these data.
Pollen tubes elongate rapidly based on actin-dependent tip-directed secretion of cell wall material, as they grow in a strictly polarized manner through flower tissue to mediate fertilization. Tobacco pollen tubes are an excellent and widely employed model system to study polarized cell growth, a process essential for cell and organ morphogenesis throughout plant development.
The tobacco genome has not been completely sequenced and information about numbers and types of genes expressed in tobacco pollen tubes is missing. There is considerable interest in many laboratories worldwide to further enhance the usefulness of tobacco pollen tube system by transcriptom sequencing.
Duties: The successful candidate for this position is expected to use established and straight forward procedures to purify RNA from cultured tobacco pollen tubes, to employ a commercial deep sequencing service to generate transcriptom data, to manage the organisation of these data into format easily accessible to other researchers, and to extract meaningful biological information from this resource. Key task will be the selection and the management of a suitable commercial deep sequencing service, as well as help with the writing of a paper making established resources and knowledge gain available to the community.
Qualifications: We are looking forward to working together with a highly motivated, goal-oriented and communicative postdoctoral researcher with an excellent command of English, who has a strong background in bioinformatics as well as in molecular biology, and is capable of working highly independently.
