Postdoctoral fellow in bioinformatics and evolution of antibiotic resistance

We seek a bioinformatician with a recent PhD degree for a full-time postdoctoral position within the research group led by Professor Joakim Larsson, Department of Infectious Diseases, Institute for Biomedicine, Sahlgrenska academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The focus of the research group is on antibiotic resistance development, particularly the role of the external environment. The group consists of 1 professor, 2 associate professors, 6 postdoctoral fellows, 1 PhD students, 1 biologist, 1 research assistant, a guest researcher as well as master students. (https://www.gu.se/en/biomedicine/about-us/department-of-infectious-diseases/joakim-larsson-group). Larsson also leads the Centre of Antibiotic Resistance Research at University of Gothenburg (CARe; www.gu.se/en/care) with over 100 researchers. The group has extensive collaboration with other universities, nationally and internationally. The research is interdisciplinary and has significant funding through e.g. the Swedish Research Councils VR and Formas.

Subject area
Bioinformatics and evolution of antibiotic resistance.

Subject area description
Most of the resistance genes that cause problems in the clinic today seem to originate from harmless, environmental bacteria, but the data is still fragmented. A better knowledge about the origins and environments involved in the mobilization and transfer of resistance genes to pathogens will be valuable to be assess and respond to threats to our health. We are now looking for a postdoctoral fellow who is interested in exploring the origins of antibiotic resistance.

Duties
The researcher will be responsible for exploring the recent origins of antibiotic resistance genes using bioinformatics and comparative genomics. The work involves both planning, execution of the analyses and writing of scientific articles, as well as giving presentation at scientific meetings.

Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

Assessment criteria
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

PhD in a relevant subject. Extensive experience with bioinformatics, and particularly comparative genomics analyses to identify the evolutionary history of bacterial genes. In depth experience with research on antibiotic resistance, particularly environmental dimensions. In depth experience with relevant software and programming skills, and a track record of public software development. Excellent scientific publication record with relevant articles in relation to the time passed since the applicant 's PhD exam.
