The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The institute for clinical sciences represents 15 different subject areas, where research and teaching is performed. This includes: anesthesiology and intensive care, biomaterials science, dermatology and venereology, gastro surgery, transplantation surgery, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, plastic surgery, radiation physics, radiology, urology, as well as ear, nose and throat diseases. The institute also hosts an information center for rare diseases. The institute is one of six institutions within Sahlgrensca Academy, Gothenburg University.

Subject area
Development and quantitative application of MR pulse sequences.

Specific subject description
MR plays an important role in the characterization of tissues, which can be gainfully used to detect disease and document the effectiveness of treatment. More recently, imaging of water diffusion has gained great importance for diagnostic applications, since it can give an indirect insight into cell architecture. A focus of our research is the development of diffusion imaging pulse sequences with low artifacts. Another focus is the advanced analysis of the diffusion-weighted MR signal with the goal to understand how hindrance at the microscopic level changes the signal. This is conducted with the analysis of clinical diffusion data, measurement in samples and computer simulations.

Job assignments
The candidate will work within a group of experienced MR physicists and in close interaction with clinical investigators. State-of-the-art 3T Philips and GE clinical MR scanners, including pulse sequence development environments, are available to conduct the research. Moreover, a Bruker 7 Tesla animal MR system and a high-field micro-imaging system is available. A main focus will be the implementation of accelerated MR diffusion imaging methods and complementary image reconstruction software. Another focus will be the optimization of advanced diffusion imaging protocols and quantitative analysis of complex water diffusion in tissues. There is certain flexibility in research focus, depending on the skills of the candidate.

Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctoral fellow at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctoral fellow aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

Assessment
Applicants are expected to have a PhD in electrical engineering, bioengineering, biomedical physics, or related disciplines. Successful applicants must have a proven publication record. Solid knowledge of MRI physics is essential. Strong computer programming skills that include experience with pulse sequence development environments and MATLAB are preferred. Experience in MR imaging of human subjects is desirable.

Employment
The employment is a fixed-term employment of 2 years full-time at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Department of Radiation Physics, University of Gothenburg. First day of employment as agreed.
