Department of Forest Ecology and Management
The symbiosis between di-nitrogen fixing (N2) cyanobacteria and feather mosses serves as the main form of biological nitrogen input to boreal forests. Despite recent advanced understanding of the significant role of feather mosses in driving forest ecosystem C and N inputs and fluxes, very little is known about the mechanistic basis of this symbiosis.
The position is formally located at the department of Forest Ecology and Management, SLU, in Umeå Sweden. The Post-doctoral Fellow will be jointly supervised by Professors Marie-Charlotte Nilsson Hegethorn and Thomas Moritz, both at SLU Umeå as well as Associated Professor Ulla Rasmussen at Stockholm University. The molecular identification work will be performed at the Swedish Metabolomics Centre (www.swedishmetabolomicscentre.se), located at the research center Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). UPSC is one of the strongest research environments for experimental plant biology in Europe.

The research environment at SLU in Umeå supports an international environment in terms of both research and teaching. For more information visit: www.upsc.se, and www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-ecology-management/. Given the cross-disciplinary nature of the project there will also be clear links to the Plant Science research at Stockholm University http://su.se/deep/english/research/research-areas/plant-sciences

The city of Umeå is the largest city in Northern Sweden, with approximately 120,000 inhabitants. Umeå is a vibrant cultural hub of northern Sweden, and was even designated a culture capital of Europe in 2014. The city houses two Universities (Umeå University and SLU), meaning that over 30,000 students live in Umeå. Umeå also has a well-developed sports, music, and outdoor recreation scene.

Duties:
We seek a Post-doctoral Fellow to explore whether and when feather mosses release secondary metabolites to attract and repulse cyanobacterial filaments, and if so, to reveal their chemical identity. We anticipate the Post-doctoral Fellow will work in a cross-disciplinary research group and carry out laboratory experiments using novel model systems with mosses and cyanobacteria as well as utilize advanced chemical instrumentation in order to characterize moss metabolite(s) underpinning the feather moss and cyanobacteria association. We expect the work will provide advanced understanding of the consequences of moss metabolite profiles for moss-associated communities of cyanobacteria and contribute to a better understanding of the N economy of the moss, and C and N cycling processes in boreal forests that feather mosses drive.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in biology, biochemistry or in a related field. The candidate should have a strong interest in research and be capable of developing the project independently and creatively. It is meriting with experience in chemical analysis, especially chromatography - mass spectrometry techniques. Proficiency in English is required.

As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at the most.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
