Subject area
tumor immunology

Specific subject description
Reactive oxygen species (ROS or ?oxygen radicals?) produced by the NADPH oxidase of myeloid cells are potent inhibitors of cellular immunity, triggering programmed cell death and dysfunction in NK cells and T cells. Inhibition of NADPH oxidase-dependent ROS formation restores lymphocyte function and lymphocyte responsiveness to cytokines. An NADPH oxidase inhibitor (HDC) was recently approved in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for the prevention of relapse among patients who have achieved complete remission after chemotherapy (Blood 108: 88-96). Recent studies from our group reveal that AML cells produce ROS and down-regulate cell-mediated anti-leukemic immunity (Blood 119: 5832-7). In AML immunotherapy, HDC is administered in conjunction with IL-2 to achieve optimal NK and T cell activation.

Job assignments
The applicant will explore the role of Tregs in HDC/IL-2 immunotherapy in AML using experimental in vivo models, in vitro experiments, and clinical samples from patients undergoing HDC/IL-2 immunotherapy.

Eligibility
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the fields of medicine, biomedicine or biology and less than three years of postdoctoral experience, counting from the application deadline. In case of special grounds, applicants that have completed their Ph.D. earlier may also be considered.
