The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following five departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Pathology and Genetics
• The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
At present, the institute has about 350 employees and approximately 290 million SEK in total assets.
Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Biomedicine, Department Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Mucin Biology Groups is recruiting a post-doctoral. Service is full-time 2 years. The laboratory uses English as the main language of communication and proficient in spoken and written English is essential. Structural Biology in Mucin Domains
Subject area description
Colon and the small intestine are lined by mucus layer that protects epithelial cells from contact with the bacteria. These mucus layers are different in different parts of the intestine and failing associated with inflammatory bowel disease. The main constituents of mucus are produced by goblet cells. The airways are also protected by mucus and in this case also formed from special glands. There are a total of four different gel-forming mucins and these all have both similarities and differences. The basis of the project is now to study the molecular domains of these mucins to understand how the different parts interact and how these contribute to the different properties of the mucus.
Job assignments
Own research under guidance as for a post-doc. The work is to independently carry out projects that address how the different domains of the gel-forming mucins structure by using different types of structural biology and biochemical methods.
Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Assessment
Holder of a doctorate in biochemistry or similar with great experience in protein structure. Particular emphasis is placed on the ability to independently express, set up and clean up various sub-domains of these mucins and then study the biochemical methods (gel filtration, electrophoresis), thermophoresis, and other methods. Competence in low-angle X-ray scattering is of special importance allowing analysis of molecular size and shape. Collaboration with other researchers doing structural analysis with NMR and electron microscopy are important. Special emphasis is also placed on the ability to independently analyze the results obtained and the use of various types of modeling programs. It is of special important to be able to work with others and to work independently.

The employment is full time and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
