Duration of employment: 2 years. Extent 100%

First day of employment: As agreed

The Mucin Biology Research Groups at the Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Biomedicine, Department Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology are international leaders in the research field of mucus, mucins and its other major components. Mucus is produced by goblet cells and in the gut it forms a protective layer that separates the intestinal bacteria from epithelium. In the airways, mucus transports bacteria away at the same time as it protects the epithelium.

Subject area

Medical bioschemistry and mucin biology, especially in the respiratory tract

Subject area description

Colon and small intestine have a layer of mucus that protects their epithelial cells from contact with the intestinal bacteria. The mucus is different in various parts of the intestine and its failing is associated with inflammatory bowel disease. The main constituents of mucus produced by goblet cells where there are different types. The airways are also protected by mucus and in this case also formed by special glands. There are a total of four different gel-forming mucins and these have both similarities and differences. The basis of the project is now to study the mucus and mucus formation in the airways, a project in which we use all the knowledge acquired from our studies of the intestine to understand the function of mucus in the airways. It is important to study the different mucins to understand how the different parts can bind to each other and thus contributing to the different properties of the mucus.

The work is to independently carry out projects that address the gel-forming mucins and related components, which can include different types of structural biology and biochemical methods.

An important part is to be able to use different types of transgenic mice to access tissue to study and as disease models. Animal experiments and similar ex vivo experiments to study various drug candidate effects are also important.

The project aims for new knowledge to be used for the development of new types of therapies for lung diseases like chronic bronchitis and cystic fibrosis.

Job assignments

Own research under guidance as for a post-doc.

Eligibility

An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment

Ph.D. with extensive experience in working with the techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology. Experience from lung research is an advantage. Particular emphasis is on the ability to independently plan and conduct experiments that include animals, tissues and cells. Special emphasis is also laid on the ability to independently analyze the results obtained and the use of microscopy, including confocal microscopy, as well as protein analysis methods like gel electrophoresis. Of great importance are interpersonal skills and the ability to pursue independent work. Fluent written and spoken English is an absolute requirement.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
