A post-doctoral research position is available to study innate immunity with focus on interactions between human neutrophils and NK cells at the Sahlgrenska Cancer Center, Department of Biomedicine at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
Subject area
Innate immunity.
Subject area description
Neutrophils are commonly overlooked in immunology and viewed upon as solitary, unspecific killers of ingested microbes. This view is changing. In recent years, work from us and others have shed light on novel aspects of a multi-faceted interplay between neutrophils and other immune cells. Neutrophils can respond promptly to a tissue injury and migrate rapidly to the affected tissue. There, they drive inflammatory response and shape the ensuing immune response by producing an array of chemokines and cytokines, releasing immunomodulatory proteases, releasing reactive oxygen species and engaging in intimate interactions with other immune cells.
Job assignments
The successful candidate will characterize how the interplay between different substances and enzymes released by neutrophils contribute to the development of a prompt immune response. More specifically, the project aims to define a novel group of mediators that we recently discovered, to functionally characterize them, and to determine their presence and role in different inflammatory pathologies.
Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Assessment
The ideal candidate would have a PhD in molecular cell biology/immunology, a strong track record, and experience in flow cytometry, cellular assays, mass spectrometry and protein production. The successful candidate should be able to carry out projects independently and is expected to collaborate with other members of the laboratory and external collaborators. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
