We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated individual to join the Thoren group as a Postdoctoral Fellow to study innate immunity with focus on interactions between human neutrophils and NK cells.
Subject area
Innate immunity
Subject area description
Neutrophils have for long been considered unspecific effector cells with limited interplay with other immune cells. Recent studies from our group and others have identified novel aspects of neutrophils interactions with other immune cells. The multi-faceted interplay between neutrophils and NK cells can result in completely different outcomes; Neutrophils can stimulate NK cells to interact with DCs and thus promote adaptive immune responses, but neutrophil may also, by release of reactive oxygen species, inactivate and suppress NK cells. Moreover, we have previously demonstrated that neutrophils express a ligand to the activating NK cell receptor NKp46, enabling NK cells to induce neutrophil apoptosis.
Job assignments
In the current project, the successful candidate will explore novel molecular aspects of the NK neutrophil interplay using samples collected from patients and healthy volunteers. Methods will include, but not be limited to , multi-parameter flow cytometry and sorting, protein production and proteomics, and functional analyses. The objective of the project is to dissect how an inflammatory environment influences NK cell - neutrophil interactions.
Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Assessment
A strong background in cellular immunology, neutrophil biology, and flow cytometry is highly desirable. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Applicants should have first author publications in recognized peer-reviewed journals. Previous demonstrated capability of working independently is highly meriting.
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
