Postdoctoral fellow in Immunology / Rheumatology
Location: Institute of Medicine, Gothenburg
At the Department of rheumatology and inflammation research, translational studies on inflammation caused by e.g. autoimmunity, allergy and infection are conducted with the aim to
determine mechanisms involved in tissue inflammation. Projects at the department range from basic research and animal models, to clinical trials and rehabilitation of patients.
Our research group studies the influence of sex hormones on the immune system during inflammatory diseases and inflammation-induced osteoporosis.
Subject area
Immunology / Rheumatology
Specific subject description
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that leads to joint inflammation and development of osteoporosis. Th17 cells are involved in the pathogenesis of arthritis by increasing joint inflammation and stimulating development of bone-resorbing osteoclasts. Treatment with estrogen is protective in arthritis by reducing inflammation and protecting the skeleton. The aim of our research is to identify the immunological mechanisms involved in the protective effects of estrogen on inflammation and osteoporosis.
Job assignments
The post-doc will work with breeding and characterization of genetically modified mice in order to answer the research questions posed in the projects. Experimental models of arthritis are used to study effects on the effects of estrogen on the immune system and the skeleton during inflammation in these genetically modified mice. One focus area is to study interactions between
stromal cells and immune cells in lymph nodes and bone marrow after treatment with estrogen. Besides animal models, also cell isolation and cell culture is used in the projects. Immunological,
histological and molecular biology methods for analysis of cells and tissues will be used. The work also includes writing of grant applications and scientific publications, as well as assistance
in supervision of PhD students and other students.
Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target
those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.
Assessment
In assessing the applicants' qualifications, emphasis will be given to previous experience of working with immune cells, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, cell separations and cell
culture. Previous experience in working with experimental mouse models is a requirement, and experience in breeding is a merit. Ability of the applicant to independently plan, organize and
structure the work is a requirement. The applicant shall be able to independently analyze data and write scientific publications. The applicant should be able to work independently as well as
in a group. Good knowledge spoken and written scientific English is a requirement. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
