The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of microorganisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. At present, the institute has about 350 employees and approximately 290 million SEK in total assets.
Titel: Postdoctoral fellow in exploring functional significance of non-coding RNAs in various cancer subtypes
Beskrivning av arbetsuppgifter:
More than two-thirds of the human genome is transcribed, generating thousands of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) that currently outnumber the protein coding RNAs. LncRNA, which are more than 200 nucleotides, do not encode any proteins but take part in all ciritical biological functions that have impact on development and differentiation. Mis-expression of lncRNAs leads to tumorigenesis. Though current estimates put annotated lncRNAs number to more than 20,000 but only a handful of them have been functionally characterized. Job assignments: To undertake interdisciplinary projects in the fields of cancer genomics and long noncoding RNA. The aim of the project is to enhance our understanding of the functional role of long noncoding RNAs tumor initiation and development. The ideal applicant should have a background in bioinformatics, or an equivalent combination of computer science and biomedicine.
Beskrivning av kvalifikationer:
Eligibility: An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application. The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Assessment: The applicant expected to have bioinformatic skills with the use of established genomic tools for analyzing of high-volume DNA and RNA sequencing from tumor data sets, as well as development of novel bioinformatics methods. The work will therefore involve programming, statistical analyses and developing new pipelines. The applicants should have experience in working with Unix environment, PERL or Python programming and R language. Previous experience in handling DNA and RNA sequencing data could be advantageous. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop independent ideas, and to communicate research results in oral and written form. Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Andra uppgifter:
The application should contain: - A cover letter giving a brief description of previous research experience, and a motivation to why you are applying - A CV including a list of publications - Proof of completed PhD - Contact details of two references
