Welcome to Linnaeus University, a place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future.

This position is based at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science. The research profile at this department is multidisciplinary and includes e.g. aquatic ecology, cell- and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, zoonotic ecology and epidemiology, environmental science, climate research, environmental chemistry, environmental risk assessment and paleoecology.

Field of subject for the position: Environmental science
Placement: Kalmar
Extent and period: Full-time, 2 years (720 days). Activities should start 1st September 2019.

The basis for a postdoctoral fellow position is 100 % permanent position to no longer then a maximum of two years.

Context of position:
The working tasks consist mainly of research within geochemistry/geobiology. In your job you are expected to actively participate in the department's environment and network both internally and externally.

The aim of this postdoc project is to investigate biosignatures and low-temperature processes in subsurface environments (the deep biosphere of fractured continental rock) with emphasis on ancient and modern microbial activity (prokaryotes and eukaryotes). The postdoc will be mostly dedicated, but not exclusively, to ongoing projects at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science at Linnaeus University, such as "Characteristics and extent of microbial anaerobic methane oxidation and sulfate reduction in the deep terrestrial subsurface over geological time scales" and related studies. The work will involve practical activities, fieldwork (of drill cores, waters, gases), laboratory work (analyses and experiments) and modelling.

Part of the work, up to 20 % of the position, may include teaching and tutoring in the undergraduate and graduate level.

Qualification requirements:

Qualified for appointment is the one who holds a PhD, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD, and who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline.

Applicants must not have previously been employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than a year in the same or related subject area at Linnaeus University.

To be eligible for this position is also required ...

• a PhD degree in a subject area of relevance for the project (e.g., geosciences, geochemistry, biogeochemistry, microbiology)

• a high proficiency in written and spoken English, be able to solve difficult problems, and have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.

• Documented experience of analytical and conceptual modelling work in geochemistry/geobiology. This include sampling and analysis of bitumen, kerogen, minerals, and/or mineralized biofilms, and interpretation of biosignatures in these materials.

Assessment criteria:
Qualifying otherwise is ...

• experience of analytical protocols and sample preparation for studies of preserved ancient organic material (catalytic hydropyrolysis, Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry Raman spectroscopy stable isotope analysis, geochronology, greenhouse gas geochemistry,) and related interpretation.

• Previous documented deep biosphere research experience, particularly of ancient (but also of modern) systems as well as in astrobiological context, is particularly valuable, but not crucial.

In the overall assessment of skills, particular importance is given to the applicant's potential for a successful career as a teacher and researcher.
