Project description and work-tasks
Trace elements represent vital resources for different industrial sectors. On the other hand, the contamination of soils, glass, sediments, sludge, landfills and open dumpsites with considerable concentrations of different trace elements represent a potential threat to human health and the environment. In order to recover these trace elements as secondary resources as part of the Circular Economy, there is a need to develop extraction and recovery methods from polluted media The Environmental Science and Engineering Group (ESEG) at Linnaeus University is looking for a candidate for a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Sciences and Engineering
The candidate will focus on the extraction and recovery of trace elements such as Pb, Cd, Zn, As, etc. from waste glass by using different physical and chemical methods. The position also includes the extraction of different trace elements from dredged sea bottom sediments, oil polluted soils, sludge from WWTPs and fine fractions of wastes from landfills and open dumpsites by using chemical methods such as the extraction by chelating agents. The work will also include phytoremediation tests and related waste-/storm-/leachate water problems.
The candidate will work with experimental research activities and technology development in partnership with academia, Swedish industry and professional communities based on the Triple/quadruple Helix approach.
The candidate will be involved in multi-disciplinary research, including environmental science, chemistry, statistics, computational modelling and a landfill mining approach. The candidate is also expected to carry out research in the field in collaboration with other research groups nationally and internationally as well to being involved in teaching in Industrial Ecology and other related topics.
General requirements
To be qualified for the appointment the candidate must possess a PhD in Environmental Science or Engineering and should have obtained the degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Candidates are not qualified if they have had previous employment as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one year in the same subject or related areas at Linnaeus University.
Specific requirements:
• Documented experience of research in environmental science and engineering and publications in the field of extraction of trace elements from different polluted media, as mentioned above.
• Flexibility and a team-work spirit
• Very good knowledge of English and Swedish.
• Ability and experience in teaching and supervision, especially in courses within Environmental Science.
• Ability to carry out research on the subject independently and in cooperation with others, and to produce high-quality scientific papers as well as building cooperation with trade and industry.
• Skills in the methods of extraction of trace elements from waste glass, fine fraction of solid waste at landfills as well as experience in landfill mining approach and the circular economy.
• An advanced background in statistical analyses and being able to plan and carry through advanced laboratory investigations.
Other assessment criteria
Experience of extraction of metals from glass and ceramics, bioremediation, treatment of oily waters and statistics. A background in environmental engineering and/or chemical engineering as well as supervision of Master's and PhD students and certificate of a course in the Supervision of Postgraduate Programmes and Compulsory Higher Education Teacher Training
Extent and period
Full time, 2 years
The application
The last day for application is June 25, 2018. Please apply at
