Dalarna University conducts education, research, and cooperation with schools and preschools within the area of teacher education. Our initial teacher education programs prepare teachers for compulsory school and upper secondary school, including vocational school.
Besides these professional programs, we also offer a separate one-year MA and a four-year PhD in Educational Work.
The School of Teacher Education has grown substantially during recent years and now has over 50 academic staff involved in research and around 25 doctoral students enrolled in our doctoral program in Educational Work. Our educational research is primarily practice based and closely linked to our teacher education programs. It includes studies of all types of politically and publicly sanctioned educational practices, from early childhood to higher education, general as well as subject specific. Central objects of knowledge are teaching, learning, care and moral education, which are seen as integrated processes. Of interest is also research studying the central conditions for different types of educational practices, such as educational environments and policy issues.
Many of our educational programs and research projects are conducted in cooperation with schools in our region. A well-established platform for this type of cooperation is our Regional Center for Educational Development (PUD), which has successfully developed new types of work-integrated initial teacher education programs and as well as various types of continuous professional development for in- service teachers.
