Postdoctoral Fellow
Institute of Medicine
Ref no: PERM 2012/24
The Institute of Medicine announces a two-year position as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Rheumatology and Inflammation research. It is a full-time position starting at May 1, 2012.
TASKS: The main focus of the research group is to explore the mechanisms by which sex hormones affect the immune system and the skeleton. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease where local inflammation results in destruction of the joints and development of osteoporosis. Treatment with estrogens inhibits the development of arthritis and preserves the bone in both experimental and human RA, however estrogen-treatment is associated with side effects such as breast cancer and thromboembolism. Thus, it would be beneficial to develop an "RA-specific estrogen-treatment". In order to achieve this it will be crucial to characterize the underlying immunological mechanisms. The available post-doc project involves working with animal models of arthritis using mice that have their estrogen receptor, or parts of their estrogen receptor, knocked-out. The second part of the project includes working with the involvement of lymphocytes and glucocorticoids in a experimental model of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
QUALIFICATIONS: The qualified applicant should have a PhD degree in an appropriate field of medical or biological science, and have experience in working with mouse models. The candidate must be able to conduct independent research while collaborating with others in a large interdisciplinary laboratory. Duration of the post-doc position is maximum 2 years.
FURTHER INFORMATION: For further information about the position please contact professor Hans Carlsten, phone: +46-31-342 40 17, e-mail:
