Postdoctor in Theoretical physics in the unit of Ab initio Theory and Energy Materials
formally based at Theoretical Physics Division at the Institution of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM)
Duties
We perform research in theoretical physics in the area of theoretical simulations of materials properties at extreme conditions. Our research is aimed at controlling metastable phases of novel materials: from discoveries at extreme conditions towards advanced technological applications. The work spans areas of high-pressure physics, quantum mechanics, numerical methods, programming, and the use of high-performance computing in materials research.
The position is for a research project supported by the Swedish Research Council. It is focus on investigations of novel nitrides and oxides with the main goal to obtain fundamental understanding on how to control their metastable phases. Starting with materials discoveries at extreme conditions of high pressure and temperature (HPHT), we will propose and develop techniques to quenching the most interesting phases to ambient conditions, study their potential for advanced technological applications, and transfer the generated knowledge to the broad research community and to industry.
At the Theoretical Physics Division we use fundamental principles and basic concepts for development of mathematical models followed by their exploration by means of analytical and numerical methods. Qualifications
The position requires a doctorate or an equivalent degree from a foreign university. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than three years before the expiration date of the application. The doctorate should be in theoretical physics, materials physics, or similar.
The applicant must have published papers in highly regarded journals, with some on the topic of simulations of matter at extreme conditions. Experience with theoretical methods for electronic structure calculations with focus on investigations of structural, electronic and dynamical properties of materials under high-pressure conditions, which extend the expertise of the division beyond the current level is highly beneficial. Experience with high-performance computing using GPUs is especially beneficial.
Great emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities and suitability, such as the ability to work in team, collaborate with PhD students, accuracy, flexibility and speed. You should be inventive and have an independent attitude.
