The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, the Department of Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position in the area of Perinatal Neuroscience.
Subject area
Perinatal Neuroscience
Specific subject description
Preterm birth is becoming a more common and serious problem in modern society. Brain injury in the premature infant, particularly the infant of very low birth weight, is a problem of major importance. The encephalopathy of prematurity, the most common form of injury to the preterm brain, is generally thought to consist primarily of periventricular leukomalacia, a distinctive form of cerebral white matter injury. It is characterized by loss of premyelinating oligodendrocytes, and is associated with a high risk of neurodevelopment impairment, such as spastic motor deficits categorized as cerebral palsy, and /or cognitive, attentional, behavioral, and socialization defects that significantly impair quality of life. Currently, the mechanisms of premyelinating oligodendrocytes injury in periventricular leukomalacia are unclear.
The current project will focus on the role of neonatal immune system in the encephalopathy of prematurity. The project is highly innovative and will help to gain new insights for understanding the pathogenesis of encephalopathy of prematurity and leading to the discovery of new prevention/neuroprotective strategies. The project represents an international collaboration with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, Boston.
Job assignments
We are recruiting an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher with a combined neuroscience and wet-lab focus to join the Perinatal medicine research group. Research projects will involve the analysis of T cells after brain injury, evaluation of preterm brain injury using transgenic mice by different interventions; and include hands-on experimental molecular biological work. The position requires a qualified and highly motivated person with great energy who is comfortable working independently as the leader of a project as well as working within a team environment. Successful candidates will join an enthusiastic and collaborative team in an excellent scientific environment. Teaching opportunities will also be offered to the successful applicant.
Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.
Assessment
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant research area such as neuroscience, molecular biology, or immunology. The candidate is required to have a strong research background and demonstrated ability to successfully complete a project. Excellent skills in written and spoken English are essential.
The candidate must have a strong scientific track record as evidenced by published or accepted papers in well recognized peer-reviewed journals. Proven skills in surgical techniques with small animals are meritorious.
