At the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, research in several different areas is conducted, such as endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, pulmonary medicine and allergology and clinical nutrition. Research is focused on body composition and energy metabolism. Research is conducted in close cooperation with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal hospital.

The nutrition group at Dept internal medicine and clinical nutrition consists of researchers with a focus on metabolism, diabetes, dietary biomarkers, maternal and child health in relation to vitamin D as well as to weight loss, diet during rheumatism and nutritional epidemiology. Since 2012, the group has developed a close collaboration in nutritional metabolomics with Swedish NMR Centre at University of Gothenburg. Nutritional metabolomics aims at characterizing the acute metabolic response of a controlled meal and to identifying individuals with different dietary habits using metabolomics. This is achieved in short-term meal studies and interventions over several months as well as in investigations of the "metabolic fingerprint" in study subjects of different habitual diets such as vegan, vegetarian or mixed diet.

Subject area
Nutritional metabolomics

Subject area description
Metabolomics is concerned with the identification and quantification of small molecule metabolites in biological samples such as biofluids, cell extracts and tissues. The method may also be used to describe global metabolite profiles. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or mass spectrometry (MS) represent the two most commonly used platforms. Nutritional metabolomics focuses on identifying short-term and long-term biomarkers of different types of foods and diets. Research in nutritional metabolomics has applied untargeted NMR or MS metabolomics to urine or serum samples from small controlled dietary trials of single foods or single meals. Untargeted metabolomics has also been used to evaluate the human response to complex diets. Current research in metabolomics also includes studies where biomarkers discovered in controlled intervention studies are confirmed in data that reflect habitual diets.

Job assignments
Job tasks primarily include analyses of NMR data from urine and serum samples originating from already performed diet intervention studies of single meals as well as of complex diets and specific dietary habits. Currently, statistical analyses are carried out using for example Matlab and Simca, and relevant metabolites are identified using programs such as ChenomX, Topspin and different data bases. Interpretation of data within the perspective of systems biology represents a crucial job component. Finally, tasks include compiling and publishing results in international journals.

Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject such as metabolomics, food science, nutrition. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.

Assessment
In the evaluation process the candidate will be selected who, in an overall assessment of skills and future potential, is judged to have the best possibilities to perform and develop the tasks described above. In the evaluation, great emphasis will be placed on documented scientific qualifications and
experience within the scientific area of the project. Applicants should have documented in-depth knowledge in statistics as well as in metabolic processes in eukaryote or prokaryote systems and good skills in speaking and writing.
Experiences of statistical analyses of metabolomics data using programs such as Matlab, R and Simca are of merit, as are relevant previous experiences of systems biology (e.g., pathway analyses or similar) and previous experiences of working with NMR data.
Previous publications in international journals and documented skills in presenting and communicating research in English, especially metabolomics research, are of merit.
The applicant is expected to have documented good skills to cooperate with society and to communicate his/her research. In addition, personal skills such as carefulness and flexibility as well as the ability to take responsibility and to cooperate will be evaluated.

Employment
The employment is temporary for 24 months, full-time 100%, at the Institute of Medicine, department of internal medicine and clinical nutrition. First day of employment: as soon as possible or as agreed.

Additional Information
The application, which is done online, must include:
1. Detailed CV
2. List of publications / manuscripts
3. Diploma of the first degree and doctorate in relevant area
4. Description of qualifications in relation to the advertised position
5. Two references with names and addresses
