The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position in the area of Neurochemistry.
The institute conducts preclinical and clinical research in the areas of neuroscience, rehabilitation, pharmacology, neurophysiology, endocrine physiology and circulation physiology. Scientific activities include molecular and cell biological studies, integrative experimental studies, clinical research and epidemiology.
The Neurochemistry laboratory at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology conducts neurochemical research targeted to understand the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. An important goal is to identify protein changes linked to the pathophysiology, known as biomarkers, and to understand the mechanisms that lead to protein aggregation and processing into fragments, and how these can be linked to disease pathogenesis.
Subject area
Neurochemistry
Specific subject description
Neurochemistry, with focus on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.
The position is linked to projects to study the biochemistry behind protein aggregation and processing in Alzheimer's disease and to identify and develop new biochemical markers in cerebrospinal fluid and in plasma/serum.
Job assignments
Duties include working with protein chemistry methods, including electrophoresis, HPLC methods for proteins, physicochemical methods of protein aggregation, mass spectrometry, and antibody-based analysis and development of immunassays. The postdoc is expected to independently compile the results for publication.
Eligibility
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Educations Ordinance. To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.
Assessment
PhD degree with specialization protein chemistry, physical chemistry focused on protein aggregation, neurochemistry or related field. The candidate should have research experience in the field of Alzheimer's disease, ß-amyloid and tau protein metabolism and protein aggregation. Knowledge and experience in protein chemical and neurochemical methodology as described above is qualifying. Ability to independently process data and write scientific publications is essential, as is the ability to be flexible and able to work independently. Experience of collaborations with other research groups is a merit.
Candidates will be assessed based on documented scientific experience in the field of neurochemistry and neurodegenerative diseases, as demonstrated by publications in international journals with referee system, which be given great weight. Emphasis will also be placed on personal fitness.
