LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.
The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics.

The research at the Division of Atomic Physics is centered around different applications of optics and lasers, including materials science, attosecond physics, high-intensity laser-plasma physics, quantum information, and biophotonics.
The Division operates the Lund High-Power Laser Facility, including a state-of-the-art 10 Hz multi-terawatt laser system. It is a central part of a major interdisciplinary research environment within the Lund University, the Lund Laser Centre, LLC. The division is also heavily involved in undergraduate education, especially within the "Photonics programme".
At the Lund Attosecond Science Center, research is performed on the generation and application of extremely short light pulses, in the attosecond and extreme ultraviolet range. The activities span from ultrafast optics with advanced laser systems e.g. based on optical parametric chirped pulse amplification to attosecond engineering, with design and optimization of attosecond sources (with variable pulse structure, central photon energy, repetition rate and pulse energy) and utilization for various applications in atomic/molecular and condensed matter physics.
Subject description
The project consists in in developing high-order harmonic and attosecond pulse generation using two different laser systems. The first system is a 1 kHz, tunable Ti:sapphire laser and the second a Pharos laser with a variable repetition rate between 5 and 200 kHz. Both lasers are used to pump optical parametric amplifiers to convert the light to longer wavelengths before the high-order harmonic generation. The project includes both attosecond pump-probe experiments and XUV spectroscopy.
Work duties
The main duty involved in the postdoctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching can also be included, but not up to more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.
The job assignments will include running and improving the TOPAS and the attosecond interferometer at the 1 kHz system. It will also involve development of a new attosecond source to be used with the Pharos laser. Experiments proposed by the candidate are encouraged. Some of the projects will involve collaboration with groups in particular in Europe and USA. The job will also include supervision of both master and PhD students.
Qualification requirement
Appointment to a postdoctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.
Additional requirements:
• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• A good knowledge of ultrafast optics and laser physics is required.
• Practical experience with femtosecond laser pulses and XUV spectroscopy is required.
• Experience in working with optical parametric amplification is required.
• Previous experience in working with high-order harmonic generation and attosecond pulses is a very strong advantage.
Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.
Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.
For appointments to a postdoctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:
• A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
• Teaching skills.
Additional assessment criteria:
• Experience with attosecond pulses and high-order harmonic generation.
• Skills in optics and XUV spectroscopy.
• Other experiences e.g. in programming, automation and/or mechanical design.
Consideration will also be given to ability to work independently and how the applicant's experience and skills complement and strengthen the group and the ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement "Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor" ("Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow") between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. LTH uses a special qualifications portfolio to report and document qualifications. Draw up the application in accordance with the following outline and attach it as three PDF files (in the recruitment system). Read more here:
