Department of Animal Nutrition and Management
The Department offers an inspiring research environment where we carry out basic and applied research on animal metabolism, feed science, housing and management. The goal is to create a sustainable and profitable production with good animal care that provides high quality food. The Department works with farm species as well as sport and pet animals. The research is often interdisciplinary and carried out in co-operation with other Departments, both in Sweden and abroad. Research in sustainable livestock systems in the tropics is also an important part of the activities at the Department.

Projects:
The post doc will be engaged in different projects involving data analysis in the field of animal science, i.e. the development of methods that can integrate large and complex data sets from different registration systems in milk enterprises. The ultimate goal is to provide decision support for optimizing animal health and efficiency at both individual and group level.

Duties:
The successful candidate should be able to develop a research area that includes integrating large amounts of data generated on modern dairy herds. Based on this information, the candidate should be able to create models that can be used to detect cows with deviating feed consumption patterns, health problems or impaired fertility. Model development should enable individualized management, especially in large herds, and also form the basis for development of user interfaces for herd management tools. The candidate is expected to manage data, perform statistical analyses, prepare scientific publications and present them at international conferences.

Qualifications:
The candidate should hold a PhD in applied mathematics, statistics, biology, biomedicine, animal science, veterinary medicine, or another subject that the employer deems equivalent. The candidate should have obtained the PhD degree before starting the position. Experience of applying numerical analysis to biological problems, to work interdisciplinary with biological issues and insight into animal science is an advantage. Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the PhD degree no more than three years before starting the employment. The candidate should have documented experience of independently analyzing and interpreting large amounts of data originating from biological systems. The candidate is expected to have strong analytical skills and knowledge of modern statistical packages (e.g. R). The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. A good ability to work in teams, ability to work independently and personal suitability for the project are of high importance. A strong publication record (in relation to the time since dissertation) in quality peer reviewed journals is a merit.
