We are searching for a motivated postdoctoral researcher interested in exploring effects diversification of agriculture on crop yield, other ecosystem services and biodiversity in a changing climate. The project has strong elements of synthetic research with collection and analysis of long-term data from multiple locations. The successful candidate will enter a strong international research environment addressing topical basic as well as applied ecological research questions.
Diversification of agriculture, for instance by growing more crop species in the rotation or in a field, has been suggested to enhance and stabilize crop yields and production-supporting ecosystem services (e.g. pest regulation, nutrient cycling), and also increase resource use efficiency. Whether this holds true and, if so, how to best diversify agriculture needs to be tested.
Duties:
The postdoctoral researcher will gather and explore trends and variation in agricultural crop yields, soil properties, biodiversity, resource use and climate with data from long term agricultural field experiments exploring effects of agricultural diversification practices. The research forms part of a collaboration among lead agricultural researchers at SLU, and the postdoc is expected to partly support this network in developing a research framework for biodiversity-based agriculture. The postdoc will actively coordinate data collection and analysis, and write and publish scientific papers in collaboration with the research team. The postdoc will enter a strong research group led by Professor Riccardo Bommarco with technical support and extensive in-house expertise (www.slu.se/bommarco-lab, @BommarcoLab ), and will collaborate with Dr. Giulia Vico (www.slu.se/en/ew-cv/giulia-vico/) and Prof. Sara Hallin (www.slu.se/en/ew-cv/sara-hallin/) among others. The postdoc is expected to contribute to team activities, assist in the supervision of students, engage in and lead lab activities, and communicate with stakeholders.
At the Department of Ecology we conduct research for sustainable agriculture, forest production and biological conservation. Our basic research on populations, communities and ecosystems forms the foundation for understanding influences of land use and climate on animals, plants and soil nutrient status and greenhouse gas balance. Solutions are sought that will produce enough food sustainably, mitigate climate change, preserve threatened species, support biological diversity and ecosystem services. Active dissemination, outreach and frequent contacts with stakeholders are key activities. We build on extensive national and international research collaborations to generate cutting-edge research and outreach to further ecology as science and promote sustainable agriculture.
Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate pursuing an academic career in ecology, environmental sciences, agronomy, biology, engineering, earth science and related, with an interest in agriculture, ecology, climate change, biodiversity and related subjects. The required qualification for the position is a PhD, which can be in ecology, environmental science, agricultural engineering, agronomy, biology or equivalent. Documented expertise in statistical analyses is required. Experiences in synthetic research, collating and analyzing large datasets, and engaging with multiple international research partners are meriting. The candidate is expected to be capable and willing to take initiative and work independently as well as in a team. The candidate should have documented skills in scientific writing. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral, are required.
