Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology

The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology was founded in the late 1970s - when the College of Forestry moved to Umeå. The number of employees has since grown steadily is now around 100, including postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students. In the late 1990s it was decided to join with the Department of Plant Physiology at Umeå University to form a research center, Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology moved into the premises adjacent to the partner department and together have developed a close and successful collaboration on research issues, technology platforms, and training of master's and doctoral level students. The international element within UPSC is large, with over 40 nationalities represented. The department conducts introductory and advanced training in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology, forest genetics and forest biotechnology within the Forestry program and at the master level. The department offers postgraduate studies in biology, specializing in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology and forest genetics. Postgraduate courses are generally held in cooperation with the Department of Plant Physiology. The combined genomic projects target innovation in tree species including genome re-sequencing to identify genome evolution, genomic base of observed variation in phenotypic traits, RNA-Seq to identify candidate genes and gene networks for adaptive and economically important tree traits, and application of genomic selection to genetic improvement of tree species. We are looking for three Postdocs to conduct research on genomic science and genomic selection in Norway spruce, Scots pine and Chinese conifers.

Duties:
Understanding genomic base of trait variation and selection based on genome sequencing is a new frontier research area for genetic improvement of animal and plant. You will participate genomics projects of Norway spruce, Scots pine and Chinese conifers including: (1) Development of efficient genotyping method for large and complex genome of conifers including whole genome re-sequencing, exome sequencing, genotyping-by-sequencing, and SNP arrays; (2) Bioinformatics analyses of re-sequencing, exome sequencing and genotyping data of SNP array and GBS, and pipeline development for conifers; (3) Bioinformatics analyses of RNA-Seq data of conifers; (4) Genome-wide association study for quantitative traits including phenology, flower, solid-wood, pulping, bio-energy, disease and adaptive traits; (5) Application of genomic selection to conifer trees. The projects will be in cooperation with Beijing Forestry University (BFU).

Qualifications:
Highly motivated and team-oriented candidates with experience in biology, bioinformatics, genome/exome sequencing, computer programming or quantitative and population genetics. To qualify, you should have a PhD degree in subjects relevant for the position. Good English communication and writing skills are required. The position is intended for junior scientists and we are preferably looking for applicants that have received their PhD not later than three years ago.
