About Malmö University
Malmö University is an innovative, urban and international institute of higher education, located in the centre of Malmö. We have around 1,800 employees and 24,000 students. Our research and education are characterised by the role we believe a university should play in an open society - to contribute to sustainability and equality in a scientifically grounded way with external partners and stakeholders. Identifying and addressing the challenges of the future are of highest priority. Our researchers and students work collaboratively to create, share and spread knowledge in order to understand, explain and develop society - both locally and globally.

Faculty of Health and Society
Our education and research is conducted with the vision of promoting health and participation. The faculty conducts research that focuses on societal problems and seeks solutions in several fields of research. We develop leading professional education programs that provide healthcare, social work and enterprises with competent staff. Our education and research are located in three locations in Malmö. Read more about the Faculty of Health and Society here.

Research environment
The major part of the research at the faculty addresses the two research and educational profiles "Biological Interfaces" and "Health and Social Conditions in a Life Cycle Perspective". The position will be active in Biological Interfaces, which has a focus on the interplay between materials, biomolecules, and cells, on molecular, nano, micro, and macroscopic levels. The faculty research is also linked to the research programme "Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces", that combines research with medical, dental, food, and environmental applications, at three faculties, in close collaboration with regional industry.

About the position
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organic and Synthetic Supramolecular Chemistry to work under the supervision of Prof Börje Sellergren. The project is focused on Reversible Self-assembled Monolayers (rSAMs), a pH-switchable version of classical SAMs allowing a reversible and ordered introduction of affinity reagents in a layered architecture. The 2-dimensional assemblies mimic the dynamic aspects of lipid bilayers but are simple to prepare, stimuli-responsive and feature fast on/off rates (Yeung, S.-Y. et al. ACS Central Science, 2017. 3, 1198-1207). This opens up new exciting areas of research that we intend to address in the coming years.

The main objectives of the project are:

(1) To study rSAMs as a tunable fluidic biointerface for controlled cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation, potentially impacting current tissue engineering efforts

(2) To transfer rSAMs to nanoparticles for potent inhibitors of bacterial infection

(3) To assess templated ligand fixation as an approach to enhance lectin affinity or to modulate cell adhesion

The specific research tasks involve the design and synthesis of ligand decorated amidine amphiphiles, structural characterisation of corresponding rSAMs on 2D and 3D supports, affinity tests and their use as lipid bilayer mimics for bacterial pathogen inhibition and for controlled cell adhesion. We expect the researcher to actively participate in undergraduate supervision and teaching.

Required Qualifications and Criteria for Assessment of Applicants
Candidates must have demonstrated scientific competence corresponding to a doctoral degree in synthetic organic chemistry with special emphasis on supramolecular chemistry, glycochemistry, and regenerative medicine. Candidates with a proven track record demonstrating practical contributions directly related to the research topic of the position outlined above will be given preference. Moreover, the researcher must demonstrate documented pedagogical skills and the overall merits required for establishing an independent research program attracting external funding.
